Well, needless to say the kit was a huge surprise. The last I knew of this kit was when Jerry was contemplating buying it and I told him how much I loved the old Camco lugs. That was quite a while ago and I had since forgotten about it altogether. I didn't know anything more about it until I came across Jerry's post about it being a gift.
The kit arrived at my office on Friday and made it home safely that afternoon. I shuffled a few things around to make room and quickly set it up, ignoring the "not another one" looks from my wife. What a fantastic kit! It simply embodies everything I have come to know and love about Blaemire drums. They simply sound terrific no matter what the tuning (or how bad I play!).
Although, with this kit the true essence of the Blaemire brand lies in the obvious wear and tear these drums have endured. This kit has been played.. a lot. I can only imagine all the bars, back rooms and stages large and small this kit has seen over the years. How many miles did these drums sit in someone's van or trailer rattling around with every pothole and speed bump? How many spilled drinks, falling cymbals and drunken patrons have they had to endure?
As we like to say, Blaemire drums are meant to be handled and meant to be played. Alan didn't build furniture in his garage, he built drums. Every dent ding, chip and rash tells the story of a working drummer. These particular drums embody that mantra in a very special way.

For those who dont know David (marcato) is my partner in crime. He is the Martin in Jenkins-Martin Drum company.
One of the things that I really never thought about as being a part of being a drum manufacturer, was the joy it brings you when you complete a kit and deliver it to a customer. When they tell you how they feel about the kit and you hear the excitement in their voice, it is one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Our drums become the voice of the new owner. That is a wonderful feeling.
Doing this restoration for David has had the same effect on me.

You two monkeys are a match made in Heaven. Business 'partner' situations only really work when the partners individual talents -compliment- each other. I earned my living as a printer/lithographer for decades and I worked for several different shops/businesses along the way. The two most "successful" of those businesses were partnerships where one guy loved running the shop, while the other partner got off running the business end. Those businesses not only made money, it was a gratifying work experience that proved to be prosperous for all concerned. You guys have that magic-mix of talents and personalities that makes for a smooth sailing ship of business. Jenkins/Martin will succeed because it has all the necessary prerequisites for success. Partners whose talents and life experience have prepared them for the job they do now.
Jerry, you're a good guy and I've always been proud to know you. Although I don't know him, I trust your judgement and I'm sure David is a good, decent guy as well. I wish both of you guys and your fledgeling company all the luck, success and wind at your back that the Universe can provide.

I decided the drums deserved an entire room to themselves. I broke out some surplus hardware and my old set of Ks as well. What can I say about these drums that hasn't already been said? I think my son pretty much sums it up.......
