They look very similar,just that the're using bubinga and maple instead of birch.My Superstars are the 100% birch 9600 series and are 4 ply,6mm with re rings,as oppose to the later superstar shell of 6 ply 9mm and no rings.
They definately have a different more resonant sound than the later stuff. Tama has done some homework here and kind of come up with a best of what the've done in the past approach,as well as the new mounting system.
