New Ludwig Dating Guide

If you are a Ludwig guy or girl you should check out Richard E.Gier's "Serial Number Based Dating Guides for Vintage Ludwig Drums".Not knocking Cook's book or any of the other lists but this is an eye opener, especially for 70's drums.Gier wrote the Gretsch dating guide that has pretty much been annointed as "THE Gresch guide".

What makes this one SO different is the MUCH larger sample of serial numbered dated drums. After reading this I believe two of my '76 sets are really '72 sets and one is a '73.Great to find out.

Ludwig collection of sets and pioneer snare drums.
Example of Rogers,Slingerland,Gretsch,Premier and Ajax sets.
Various '60's and '70's US,English and Japanese snare drums.

gonedrums,

I am glad that you like my work. Be sure to report information from your drums to me, either by using the form on the last page of the book, going to my website - www.GretschDrumdatingGuide.com or just emailing me.

I thought the information available for 1970s Ludwigs was not very complete. This seemed to be an opinion shared by many. So, when I completed the Gretsch project I turned to Ludwigs, starting with Standards (no dating guide existed) and then broadening the study to include all vintage Ludwig drums with serial numbers. Frankly, as long as I was gathering information on Standards, it was not a huge step to gather information on main line Ludwigs as well. I am proud of the result, but it represents just the next step in the progression towards more complete knowledge of vintage drums. I welcome additional data and encourage different theories so that the information available about these drums can be improved.

The Mod Orange Floor tom that you reported to me was beat out for lowest B/O badge serial number by 332. I also referred to your Psych Red Jazzfest that was in NSMD. It fell into the category of "does not quite fit with the vast majority."

Thanks for your contributions.

Rick, I now have two B+O badged psych red jazz fests with the badge hole drilled for a keystone badge. They must have wrapped a few too many shells in the keystone era!

Gonna get a copy too. Thanks. A topic that needed some updating. It'll just make us VDF'ers obsess even more over the Ludwig idiosyncrasies.

Good bathtub reading for the Winter months, I'm sure.

kcdrumdad Yes nice work just grabbed recently,

currently working on my serial # and shell info to pass on over to you if you like.

Also was wondering if you have dated any of the 70's black beauties or if you plan on it?

Was curious what might be the earliest serial # or start of those BB that you would have recorded. I have one that I will send to you as soon as I make sure I'm reading it correctly.

I bought a vistalite set in end of 76 with a supra and then a BB when it first came out and the serial #'s were real close. I think the BB's came out in early 77 if I'm not mistaken.

I did not specifically seek black beauties, but if they are from the relevant time period, and followed the same serial number system, then they should fit right in with the other drums. The lowest serial number that I have recorded in my database on a drum identified as a Black Beauty is 1579136.
