New here...question about a President Snare and a Kent Snare

Loading...

This is my first post here, so allow me to introduce myself. I'm Jeremy, and although I'm nowhere near being TheDrumGodFromCanada, I figured I'd use that as my name!

So a guy I went to high school with owns an antique shop on the other side of town. He has a snare drum made by Kent (with the 1972 logo badge on it, although the "Made In Japan" part has been scratched out) and he also has a drum with a "President" badge on it.

I've heard of Kent drums, but I'd never heard of President drums until today. I'm a bit confused about the President drum; who made them and what are they worth? My buddy is asking $125.00 for the snare. It's white and looks to be in pretty good shape.

The Kent drum has seen better days, but my buddy is asking $100.00.

Should I snag these? I have no pics as my friend has a "no pictures rule" in effect at his store.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm kinda useless when it comes to "old" snare drums...although my 1930s Olympic snare and my 1970s Ludwig Acrolite are near and dear to me!!D' Drummer

The Kent I wouldn't say is worth that amount. If it was a made in America Kent with thin maple shells, that would be a different story. For the MIJ in good condition $50

President could be another MIJ snare. Again $125 might be steep. I'd say the same price range.

Hey, Jeremy,

I would agree with ARCHxANGEL 100%. Even though I collect and play with vintage Star drums, let's be realistic.

Where are you from? I'm glad you explained your username. A few people, not too many, have "handles" that evoke nothing but, moronic images of self-centered fools.

Where are you from? I'm from Port Colborne. I've played around the area for years.

There are a lot of wonderful people on the forum. Glad you have decided to come aboard. The expertise here is amazing! Everyone is more than glad to help. These people are like family and deserve respect.

They did, and from what I recall they were Fiberglass drums. But the badge did say Pearl on it. On this thread here http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=30593 there is also a photo of a " President " snare ( also attached ) and you'll notice It's just another MIJ. So yes while Pearl did make a President line of drums, I think the snare in question is a MIJ.

While some of the President drums could be fiberglass, not all of them were. Many Presidents out there made of Luan - something to be aware of.

I would also echo that appraisal - those snares are not worth $100 +

The only way MIJ snares ever demand and get more is if they are rare and at least near mint. That $50 is more realistic, again - hard to shoot in the dark like this without pics.

The MIJ Kent drums left alot to be desired for those expecting American maple shelled drums inspired by Gretsch.

Welcome to the forum! We love vintage MIJ here alot and among us all we have plenty of expertise to help you for almost any inquiry. Seems there have been alot of MIJ scoring in Canada lately 'round here.

One more thing.......Drum Gods....can't they make drums out of dust? I'll take a numerous lugged Crown kit, a mint 60s Acro, 1968 Rogers R-380 (20in BD) in Red Ripple.....and throw in a new Ice Sparkle ddrum Reflex 5pc with a 20in BD please ;)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Gotcha, The orange and silver on definitely looks like a dealer brand MIJ.

That brings me to my next question...this one regarding my 1930s Olympic Snare. On the top hoop, "Premier Magna - British Made" is engraved. I've looked and cannot find a darn thing that mentions "Premier Magna." Is this a rare Premier drum??

The Pearl Presidents were phenolic in the late 60's then phenolic or fiberglass in the early 70's. They will say "Pearl President" on the badge.

The other MIJ Presidents are news to me. (Thanks guys!)

and to throw a monkey wrench in the works how about this badge fellas?
