Hi! I am Larry from Baltimore. Thought I would introduce myself to the forum. Been playing drums since September of 1965. Most of my sets have been vintage because I am vintage 1950. I purchased a Ludwig Classic Maple set in 2012 and Gretsch Catalina Maple set in 2013 (for practice). My main set is a Rogers Holiday vintage 1965 - 1970. Can someone help me set an approximate manufacturing date for each drum?

1) 12" tom # 24639, Fullerton

2) 13" tom # 20892, Dayton

3) 16" floor tom # 101558, Dayton

4) 22" bass drum # 101282, Dayton

From my limited research Dayton was made 1965-1967 and Fullerton after 1967.

Is there any way to track down the actual year each drum was made?

Hey Larry,

Regret can't help with your questions but welcome to the forum.

Hope other members can help you out. With the Holiday weekend may be a delay.

1969-1975 on a Fullerton drum. The 69-71 drums should have a tag similar to what was in Rogers Drums in the 60s. 1972-75 Fullerton drum will have a 9/72 date stamp tag.

Your Dayton tags in the 101xxx range are 69 numbers. The tag in the 20xxx range I suspect has a typed in or handwritten Holiday designation and something else crossed out.

Larry,

First, Welcome to the forum! What took you so long to find us?

It's pretty much accepted that Rogers serial numbers are far from definitive as far as precise dating goes, as the assembly line employees could randomly grab any paper label from bins with no regard to maitaining sequence, but, since there was a limited range of serial numbers available during any time period, a rough dating guide has been established.

Daytons were available 1967 through 1969 (it was Cleveland prior to 1967), then transitioned in 1969 to Fullerton, so since your set contains a Fullerton tom, it can be assumed that the set was put together in late 1969 or early 1970 during the start of the Fullerton period with Daytons manufactured in 1968 or 1969. Very nice set. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the help. I have been posting over at DFO for about 3 years now. I guess with a vintage set I can start posting here. I sold a Ludwig Hollywood 1970 set right before I purchased a Ludwig Classic Maple set in 2012. Those old silver sparkle Ludwigs were yellowed from being out in the sun so many times and the wrap was peeling off. Sold them for $300 which was probably a big mistake. You live and learn. I did keep the Supraphonic snare and had it refurbished.
