Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have a set of mint 3-ply 1967 Champagne Ludwigs: 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, 22 kick and a supraphonic snare. Looking to add one more floor tom. Need your opinions on the best next addition to round out the set. Considering 14x14 but hard to find. Would a second 16x16 tuned differently work just as well? Or do you have other size ideas? Naturally I will look to match the year and color. Thanks everyone. Looking forward to your input.
Need Your Advice on Adding One More Piece
I added a second 16 floor to my 60s Super Classic outfit a while back and was very happy with it.
That's a pretty set. Can you get enough sound differential without tuning out of the drum's sweet spot?
Tuning the 13 up a bit kept the floors within their "sweet ranges".
I waffled a bit finding which floor sounded best high and low before settling on where to pitch them.
A second 16 would do a very nice job if tensioned differently than the other 16. A great help to making the two drums sound good at different pitches can be accomplished by tightening the reso head along with the batter head.
I also use two 16s.. Always loved the "one up two down" look and feel.
The second one has a two ply head and tuned a bit lower. Perfect!

I have used 2 floor toms for 40 years 16x16 and a 16x18 I just recently switched to 2 16x16's and i wish I had done it 40 years ago it is much easier to swing around on and it is no problem tuning them different
You all sound very positive on the 2 16's. I had expected a different response but must say I am pleasantly surprised. No dissenters??
the only drum better than a 16x16 is a 14x16n if i could find one I would buy it I might just make one this year...
If availability were not an issue, would you still go with the 16x16 over the 14x14?
