Need Info on Rogers Snare Last viewed: 4 days ago

Hey guys, I recently picked up this snare from an auctioned storage shed. I originally thought a set of Ludwig Vistalites would be the better find, but the more I learned about this snare the more interesting it became. I believe this to be a 66-68 model Power-tone 5 1/4 x 14. What I'm not sure about is the type of lugs or throw it has. I was thinking of selling it originally, but I have a 15 yr old beginning drummer at home and now think it may make a better bday gift. What would be necessary to restore it. I don't want to make it museum quality but definitely want it to last.

Welcome to the forum,There are more knowledgable people on here but the the drum is a powertone, the lugs are beavertails,so it is 1963 or later, your strainer is a swivomatic, the earlier ones were called "clockface" swivomatics because the part that says Rogers was rounder and looked like a clock, the 1964 catalogue shows the clockface style the 1967 cat shows your throw, and your dayton tag would make it 1967/68 ,from your pics it looks like yours is missing the throw-off lever, it should look like this, http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/rogers_snare_drums/1967_rogers_snaredrums3.jpg.Those can be found on e bay,I would not know a price offhand.Your snare is rogers second most expensive, after the dynasonic,it has a brass shell, and a lot of people like them better than dynasonics.Nowadays an American made brass snare would cost at least 500.00, so that would be an excellent birthday gift for your son. They are very well made drums and they usually clean up beautifully.I bought an old dyna and cleaned it up,I took it apart and soaked the shell, lugs ,t rods, rims buttplate and throw in hot water and dish washing soap, that got all the dirt and 90 per cent of the rust off, used 0000.steel wool on the rust that was left and dried it and applied turtles chrome polish wax to it and it looked close to brand new.

Don't sell that drum, keep it.

I have several vintage snares, such as Supra, Acrolite, Rogers Dynasonic, Slingy Gene Krupa, various older Premiers, Pearl Jupiter, etc. and my Powertone snare blows them all away. Best sounding snare out of the 12 or so I've got on hand now.

I always cringe when I see steel wool mentioned in a vintage Rogers thread.

I never touch the stuff.

Love the powertone. Mid 67 after the fire.
