What exactly is going on gonzo? The drum should have the P85 throwoff....pretty simple and dependable strainer. Need more info on the problem.

The thing about strainers is either they strain or they don't. You may find that they won't hold tension and begin to loosen up over a period of time or the mechanism my be sticking requiring two hands, a wrench, blow torch or other incendiary device to engage or disengage, but otherwise if it applies tension it should work.

Is the issue the physical "snare" sound such as needing to tension the strainer to the point of choking to get a clean sound? Could it be a head or tuning issue? Damaged or uneven bearing edges?

More to the point can you describe in detail what you are experiencing and what you would like this drum to accomplish?

Also, check to see if all the parts are straight. I don't do a LOT with vintage Ludwigs, but I see a lot of bent strainer screws, if that makes sense.

I have also see the frames bent downward...so, simple check...
