Nature of the beast !! Last viewed: 6 hours ago

This is a continuation of a post I made several years ago, about buying drums.

To refresh some of you I bought a gretsch floor show wmp snare drum from a youth pastor. The ad was put on CL late in the evening, I responded by phone to the seller. at 11 0'clock pm. the seller informed me he had two other people that stated they may come the following day. I told the seller if they would let me come I would come Now !! He said come on first one here with the cash gets the drum. it is a 1 hour 40 minutes drive one way. the seller stated I stay up late come on. long story short. I bought the drum, They had it donated to them along with a bunch of other music gear a Fender P bass, peavey power amps etc, he was selling the stuff to cheap, I buy and sell guitars and amps, I told him the prices are to low, they placed the grear on CL and got the prices I told them to sale them for making a $300.00 profit over what the price they had first decided to sale it for. So by me going to buy the drum, the church youth program made $300,00 more than had I not gone, my good deed for a good deed by the seller. So now to my point I was just in the process of going to buy a drum ,I was the 1st responder to the ad, I was in the process of leaving the seller text messages me and states he has a buyer on their way Now. This has happened to me many times, Probably to many of you also, But some of the members on this forum got their panties in a wad, about me going late that night to buy the drum shooting the other two people whom stated they may come the following day. It got quite heated between myself and one member here on the forum .I was very suprised by his response, But as the title of this thread states it is the Nature of the beast. It boils down to the seller has the right to sale to whom ever he/she wants to !! ok rant over.

I only have one rule about that kind of thing; If I -know- the other person who is after a drum, (somebody I know from the forums,) I will back off completely, or ask to be placed in-line after the other guy for a shot at the drum. If it's a stranger, somebody I do not know personally, then, it's a dog eat dog world and the race goes to the swiftest runner. Among strangers it's an open competition. If it's somebody I know, then I don't want to step on their toes if they called in, or got there first. I wouldn't want anybody doing it to me, so I don't do it to anybody else.

Among complete strangers? It's -open season- (open competition,) to hunt the drum in question.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I can just picture two buyers hell bent on making it to the seller's home in the dead of the night. Something like this.. :)

I remember that thread. I thought you were in the right the whole time and still do. I used to lurk craigs list like every hour looking for drums but it has kind of worn down, Im not as competitive as others and I have too many drums now anyway. To be honest, I have been around VDF long enough now that I have more trust in the regular members here than anyone. Of course I will always have my eyes open. Every time we go on a road trip the first thing I say is, look out for drums! Nature of the beast!

Thank you!

I think everyone here is right. If you really want something and the price is right you better get there and get there ASAP. As a seller it's makes sense too because I've had lots of people say "I'm coming tomorrow and they don't show don't even call.

My theory is until there is cash in my hand these are for sale.

Good communication goes a long way as well.

I have missed out on some really sweet deals due to misguided loyalty on the part of a seller for a buyer who promises to show up tomorrow, or called first but cant get there right now. I always figured if I call and they still have it, as long as someone has not SEEN IT or PUT MONEY, then it is still first come with the cash.

I can't see how it could be different. I totally agree.
