Thought I'd share these pix of my two 1970's Ludwig kits. One is a Silver Sparkle, the other my pride and joy, a stainless steel kit.

Welcome Amstel Man, nice tubs.

In most cases you mic the batter head, (top) on toms, and snare. The bass drum mic is usually placed on the reso side (front head), or in the bass drum through a port. In recording studios, mics can be placed on both top and bottom heads, then blended in the mix.
