The other day I started a thread about a mystery snarehttp://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=54429
Well, it ended turning into a project. Once I finally got all the mack-tack & broken lugs off the shell I realized how nice the outer ply of mahogany looked. & thanks to the fine folks at VDF for helping me identify this snare as a Slingerland Artist. I then started to dig for Slingerland lugs & a Zoomatic strainer on the net and quickly figured I could buy another snare for the price of parts. I'd been cleaning up an old Ludwig marcher at the time and after looking at the hole spacing on the remaining Slingerland lugs I realized that the nickel-plated Bowties from the marcher would work. Since this is a players drum anyway I went ahead and drilled for the generic strainer which I had kicking around. The last step will be to add a muffler using the original Slingerland muffler, but I'm going to swap out the knob arm for a nickel-plated Ludwig one once I find where I put it...
So all in all this snare didn't cost me a penny & I love both the tone and the look, though I'm going to take it all back apart and rub it with Danish oil. But not before I play it for a few days!
PS: I know this is gonna kill some of the OCD purists here :D
