my new old Gretsch kit, need help dating it Last viewed: 3 days ago

I'm trying to get a feel on what year my new project drums are

As far I can tell they are 70's walnut finished SS badge in sizes 12/13/16/22

What is strange is the kit has the old style 60's tom mount .

6 ply Jasper shells are silver sealed but have no traces of ever having any gretsch labels

plus the matching remaining batter side walnut hoop has black inlay

I figure maybe late 60' early 70's , anyone out there with any ideas on dating this please chime in, thanks

thanks, I actually have the Pratt bass drum hardware but it's missing the tone control knob, Does the Pratt BD muffler use the same exact tone control knob as used on the toms ? looks like someone cut the fabric strip off years ago.

The Evans oil red heads are off and will not be returned to the kit ever again. They were fugly! It looks as though most people restoring the older kits are using coated Ambassadors for a classic appearance. What heads are best for this kit? I use Evans G2 /G1 for my modern 2004 Gretsch Renown kit .

Have you guys seem many 70's kits using this older style tom mount?

My 69 round badge kit (sold it) had that tom hanger. Your badge was offered 70-79 (VDF Badge timeline Guide) - transition from RB to this SSB was 70 I guess. So the drums are 1970-79 as far as I can tell.

Nice drums

Great kit!

Strip off the metal hardware, apply paste wax, work it on,let set 5 minutes, buff off......shells will look WAY better!

paste wax? what type or brand? I know these shells have a fair amount of battle scars but I want to be careful not to destroy the remaining finish.

Are you talking about Carnauba (from trees in South America - that's what is on a lot of your fruit - it's edible) Mothers or McGuiar's car wax....the good stuff? I use Mothers.

I just use good old Johnsons PW......easily available in the US.

I'm sure there is much higher end paste out there.... haven't searched for it.......

I got hipped to PW by reading about a guy who restored very expensive furniture, and that's what he used.........

Works great on wood finish drums
