My new Camco gem. Last viewed: 3 seconds ago

Loading...

I had recently visited the Drum Center of Portsmouth here in NH, and was admiring the new Dunnett/George Way drums they had.

Just beautiful in my opinion.

It gave me a desire to obtain a Camco snare with the tuxedo lugs.

I pulled the trigger on this snare on ebay.

My first Camco, and I am very happy.

Listed at $450 or best offer. The seller acknowledged being unsure if the strainer was missing the extension.

I confirmed that it was, and made a lower offer that was accepted.

This drum is a beauty. Other than the strainer arm, it looks to be in almost new condition.

No fade to the wrap, the hardware has no corrosion, and everything appears to be original, but please let me know if you spot a problem.

First off, it is 4.5" deep. Exactly 4.5". Is that unusual?

It is a 3 ply shell.

The bearing edges are great, the badge and grommet have no signs of tampering. The snare wires and even the cords may be original.

The heads might even be original, and look barely used.

It sounds outstanding!

Barely visible on the inside of the shell , underneath the white paint, are the words "maple" in cursive writing, and "color" in print.

The key holder is there, but the key itself is not.

Congrats. I'd be interested to read if you've played it yet and your thoughts on sound, etc.

I used a 1/4 piece of Moongel on the batter, and it sounds great!

Wish I could post sound files that accurately represented the drum, but my camera does not do that very well.

Not one spot of pitting or corrosion anywhere on this snare.

Tunes up easily.

I can see why Camco drums get respect.

I had a lacquer version with the turret style lugs. Along with the wood Rogers Powertone model it was the best all round snare I've played.

Keep on Pl

Never play it the same way once.

Beautiful drum!

And I have to agree about the new George Way snares. They are beautiful and sound fantastic. And I love that most (if not all?) are built with 8 lugs instead of 10. Much more warmth and body to the tone.

I checked out a 6.5 x 14 Aero w/ single-flange clip hoops last year. It was unreal.

And prices are actually not insane.

Hey Matt - welcome to the Camco club!

-Now- you know what all the fuss was about. Some of the best sounding/playing drums ever made. Enjoy yours. All you need now is an Oaklawn rack tom, bass drum & floor tom to go with that awesome snare! :D

John,

The thought of a set of BDP Camcos had already crossed my mind.

I see the Tuxedo outfits came with an 8x12 tom and a 14x20 bass. I would love that.

Did they make Tuxedo floor toms during the Oaklawn era?

John, Did they make Tuxedo floor toms during the Oaklawn era?

You betcha. From the 1962 catalog. 14x14 or 16x16. The experts may know if an 18" Tuxedo floor tom was ever made. I've got a 14" Oaklawn Tuxedo myself.

red already answered you, but yes, they do come up for sale at fleabay from time to time. The Camco category at fleabay is one you have to follow from week to week. When the items you're looking for come up for sale, get the checkbook out and go for it. The competition for certain specific drums can get fierce though. You have to be tenacious and determined not to mention have deep pockets when the drums you're looking for finally do come up for sale. It is do-able though. Took me two years to assemble my first Oaklawn kit of orphans. It was the only way I could afford to do it. Patience pays off.

So true John. I feel "fortunate" to finally land a very, very nice complete set of Camco straight floor tom legs on eBay a couple of weeks ago. Set me back $120, but they were just as you said...items I had been looking for. When the notification popped up on my phone, I didn't hesitate.

I don't know what it is with Camco floor tom legs, but they're a hot commodity.
