My near mind '67 Supraphonic!

hey guys! great story!!!

not sure if any of you saw this supra recently on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160798788877?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_500wt_842

it looked in pretty crummy condition, but i really wanted a 60's supraphonic. I took a punt and bid on it. When it arrived I was met with exactly what I thought I would see. crummy chrome. I sighed and took it apart and started thoroughly thoroughly examining it.

ooooh - the date stamp is in pristine condition at least. thats nice. and an original batter head! and original resonant head! Hey! original snares as well. There was even a little price tag that was rattling around in there - i'm not sure it was for the snare though. It reads:

Jordan Marsh

719 18

5.99

Jeez lucky me. Shame about the chrome though. But then I started to clean and lo and behold...the chrome wasn't pitted at all!!! it looked like something had just been spilled on it and allowed to dry...gosh the stuff almost seemed to have PROTECTED the chrome! it polished up to be near MINT! PLUS it had original badge, muffler, date stamp, skins, wires, strainer, butt plate --- everything!

My lucky day :D here's a before and after shot

I have five brothers, and all of us play some kind of instrument or another; one of my brothers was always scoring stuff cheap from garage sales and the want ads.

We grew up in an old house that had a basement with a coal room next to the furnace. We called it the "Cave" and had all kinds of instruments set up there.

Including a snare like that, which my brother scored somewhere. The chrome was peeling, there was paint splattered on it. None of us knew much about drums, and since it didn't look good, we didn't think much of it.

But, it always sounded just like a snare should sound.

Somewhere along the way it disappeared when we were moving from one place to another.

I wish I had it now...

Great story and great job on cleaning that one! I fully understand your statement regarding whatever was spilled on the drum actually protecting the chrome. I had the exact situation with a snare of mine some time ago. Just wondering what you used to polish her up?

A sign of good chrome could mean its cob, does it have the Ludalloy sticker inside?

ahhhh thanks guys!!!

i used 0000 steel wool SUPER gently. Then wiped it down with a super soft surgical towel (i'm a medical student :D) then put some chrome polish to really bring it out and hopefully protect from future pitting.

i also used some vinegar on the tension rods and lug inserts for a few hours (a trick i saw posted on this forum actually) and it worked a beauty!

aaahhh! and now you mention it, there was a tiny little goldish coloured spec that was underneath one of the lugs...i'll see if i can find it. but the shell itself is quite light - it didn't feel like a brass shell to me...but i did have the same thought!
