Here is an update on my project.......while I still play in this oldie band once a month, I've been networking trying to put together a horn band and all I can ssy is WHERE ARE ALL THE HORN PLAYERS??? I have on board myself/keys/guitar/bass/vocal and I've tried about every marketing effort know to man and I can't attrack any horns. The ones I have heard from are jobbers, or some guys even have the nerve to ask if they will get paid to practice, these guys are a different breed. I did the Clist thing, ads in music stores, contacted local colleges directing info to the music director asking if he had some students who like some experience performing, kind of like an internship, I thought this was a great idea, nothing, I even signed up on brass/horn/sax and trumpet forums and intorudced myself trying to get contacts. nothing. I'm not the type of guy who gives up on something till I get it done, but this has stumped me.

That actually does not surprise me in a major market like Chicago. There are far less professional horn players than there are rhythm section musicians. Horn players, specifically brass players have to keep their chops up on a near daily basis so being a horn player is a pretty serious commitment. Most of them end up on high end gigs such as orchestra, high dollar society work, sessions, etc.
Your idea of finding some talent in college is a good one. Keep at that and it will eventually pay off. There are plenty of talented college kids who would like to make a few bucks on weekends. I was playing two to five nights a week when I was in college playing every imaginable situation. Also, there are plenty of high school band directors out there that might like to dust off their fake books and relive some high school fantasies.

+1 - Don't give up on CL. Ask specifically for 'old-phart musicians' who are interested in jamming with the possibility of some gigs down the road. I'm sure there are some guys out there who would love a situation like that. Give it all the time it takes to find who you're looking for. Quitting, or giving up looking now will never produce results. Keep plugging away at it and you at least have the chance alive of finding a couple of players.

Who needs horn players when you can get a keyboard that can just about replicate the same sound. Unless you're during strictly jazz, but if it's a jazz/rock sort of thing, you can get by without a real horn player.

I agree. I write my own music playing keyboards, and I have some very authentic horn samples. The real thing, meticulously recorded. BUT it's not the same as having the real instrument and a good player. I know and jam with several horn players, but they're all in like 5 bands and doing sessions. As stated above, those guys keep their chops honed all the time, and free time is very limited. That's the way it is here in Atlanta anyway, and we have LOTS of horn players.
Good luck.

Mr. Relayer,
What horn samples do you have and like?
I am going to get a new horn library.
My 80's Roland JV1080 is not good for horns.
Thinking about VI Mojo Horns.
Sorry to hijack.
Samples are OK.
Nothing beats a real human blowing air threw a tubular aparatus.
Wait a minute............ I sometimes do that.
I have also thought about getting some eager Junior College students to record my horn parts.
Oh wait..........then I would have to write charts.

Thanks to Mr. Jerry Jenkins
Bingo!! Might be easier to start an orchestra, than to coerce horn-players to a no-name, no-paying-gig project.
Maybe start with what you have, make a name, get some work, then look for horns.
Good luck with your project. Big band would be fun. Lots of possibilities, music-wise.

I use these: http://warpivmusic.com/ You have to have the full version of Kontakt to use them though. They are very authentic. You can listen to soundfiles on the site.
Good luck.
