My First Slingerland Purchase!

Loading...

I picked these up today; I got a great deal on them. I love how the Black Diamond Pearl has sufficiently aged and is just a tad "dirty". They are overall in very good shape, complete with stick saver hoops, all original legs, spurs and appointments (except where noted below). Niles, IL badges with Serial Numbers. The date stamp inside the floor tom is March 7, 1963. The interiors are in great shape. Re-rings, but the shells are heavy. Sizes are 12"/13"/16"/20" . I haven't done any cleaning or polishing at all yet. The chrome looks good throughout and the wrap has a few blips here and there, but I'm sure will look better after some Novus. All the seams are tight and the wrap has no cracks or tears.

I am not very up on Slingerland stuff, so I hope you experts can help me on the materials used, authenticity of components etc.

A couple of obvious issues on this kit:

1. One bass drum hoop is not original.

2. It looks like the bass drum was used backwards. Notice how the badge and tom mount tightening nut are facing out towards the resonant side of the bass drum. The spurs are about in the center of the shell. Should the writing on the badge be facing the batter side?

3. Check out the photo of the close up of the tom mount (last picture). The tom mount wingscrew (that controls the height of the main post) is not original, and is stripped. Either that, or it's not long enough to "activate" the insert on the inside of the tube (which is why the toms look a little crooked in the photos-the downtube is totally loose-just the memory lock is holding it up). Also, look at the knarley cigarette burn on the bass drum near the hoop, right in-between the two toms. Burned all the way through the wrap down to the wood, which is charred! Who needs an ashtray when you have a perfectly good bass drum, right? My guess is a previous owner had one of those bass drum mounted spiral or spring shaped sitck holders and used it for a cigarette too!

Here's where I need some help:

1. Do the tom mount and claw hooks appear to be original? The tom mount is engraved "Slingerland, Niles, IL" at the top.

2. Regarding the stripped nut on the tom mount that controls the post height, is that a two piece mount that's attached to the bass drum? In other words, can I pop the "cap" off (like at the top of a snare or cymbal stand base that controls the height adjustment for the next tube above it) and replace it with a different Slingerland one, that I have from extra cymbal stands? It appears to be two piece, but I am not for sure. It certainly looks exactly like the top of a Slingerland snare or cymbal stand base.

3. What were these drums made of (Maple, Birch etc.)? How many plies?

4. Notice on the 13" Tom, the internal tone control faces out towards the audience, whereas on the 12" it faces the player. Strange. Both badges face 90 degrees away from the player, to the outside.

This is my first Slingerland kit, and first "brand name", non-MIJ vintage kit. I am going to have a lot of fun with these! As for you Slingerland guys, do you think they look good? Would you have purchased them with the flaws noted? I am always interested into what Slingerland players, collectors, afficianados etc. would think of these. I got the drums as pictured for $425. I thought it was a good deal. Thoughts? Opinions? Fire away!

Thanks for allowing me to share!

Welcome to the Slingy club!! Think you did very well.

Not sure what would have caused that burn, to big for a cig. strange.

You will need to take a head off to sort out the construction.

Sorry can't help with the other questions.

Congrats,

Creighton

Nothing special here but I like them.

the badge should face the reso side or you sitting behind the kit, these are late 60's model, they are 3 ply they are either maple, popular, mahogany, or all maple, post an interior pic can you post them om the forum instead of the host site? the wing nut and screw on the double tom mount are factory correct. this was a killer deal you got this would cost you double if I was selling them to you. get some novus plastic polish your finish will shine for years after that.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Thanks for the info.

These are from 1963, according to the date stamp inside the floor tom (there is a clear resonant head on the floor tom that I can look through to see it). They are way too heavy to be 3 ply. I'll post some interior shots when I get the heads off of them.

According to what I was told, the Niles, IL badge with Serial Numbers were made from 1963-1969. Is that right? Again, the date stamp on these is 1963.

In what years did Slingerland manufacture that particular tom mount? The downtube is 5/8", which is pretty skinny especially compared to their later stuff.

Anyone know if the bass drum claws are correct? They look like modern Gibraltar's to me. Also, I'm sure it was issued with T-Rods from the factory, not key rods.

they are most certainly 3 ply from 63 also the bass t rods could be factory I had a kit with just t rods and not t handles on it, the bass drum claws are factory. the pics are so small it's hard to see.

+1 on 3 ply shells. I have basically this exact setup but mine are from about 1968. Mahogany outer ply followed by poplar and maple. I thought that in 63 there weren't any vent holes in the toms? maybe the floor tom is earlier than the rest of the kit? Either way nice score! My bass drum is also just like that one with regards to the post adjusting wing screw and the badge.

Cool. Always nice to know more!

I guess I was wrong on the 3-ply thing. I have a couple MIJ 3-ply with re-rings, and these Slingy's are about twice the weight per drum, I guess that's why I was thrown off!

After looking closer at the date stamp inside the floor tom (I still haven't taken off the heads), the last digit is smeared. The rest of the stamp is clear as day. It says "March 7 196....". The last digit is unclear. It looks like a 3 to me, but I guess it could also be a 5 or a 6.

I'll post some of the interior pics when I get to them.

So just to confirm, is the way they are set up in the photos (badge on bass drum closer to reso head side and wingscrew on tom post acceptor closer to reso head side) the correct positioning?

Also, did this particular kit/configuration have a name? Ludwig had "Club Dates", "Big Beat", "Jazzette" etc.

Thanks for all the info. I am excited to be a "Slingy Guy"!

Nice Slingys~! They really do look nice. The burns in the wrap just add to the mojo and history of them. Could have been a cigar or a big fat doob Cool Dude never know! Either way it's part of the character each kit has. The light blue pearl kit I have the wrap has quite a few scars and warts. The wrap color is pretty forgiving and hides most of them well. To me the sound is the biggest factor and these all do sounds great! :)

The bass drum is correct. In all the catalogs I've seen from that time the double rack tom configuration is 12,12,16,20 so I'm not sure if 12,13,16,20 had a configuration name or not. It became the "rock" outfit late in the 60's with the new style double tom holder. Mine is like yours with the earlier tom holder. that part is still a mystery to me. BTW that floor tom will sound massively improved by replacing the rubber feet with those pearl isolation feet. You'll be surprised.

Black diamond pearl is one of my favorite wraps although I've been told by many that's it's not a favorite among vintage drum collectors for whatever reason. I've had Rogers, Camco and Slingerland kits in that particular wrap and love 'em all.

Your kit appears to be in extremely sound condition, both cosmetically (despite the burn hole) and functionally speaking. The only thing that I don't like about it (and it's strictly a personal choice) is that extremely unstable double tom rack. I think it's one of the worst designs ever made. It drove me nuts when I had one on one of my kits. It never seemed stable enough to handle the weight of both toms. Other than that I think you did very well. CONGRATS and ENJOY!
