Music Masters Student Looking for Drum Making History Information

Loading...

Forum Members,

I have had a running email conversation with a student working on his Master is Music. He is writing a research paper on the history of drum making. I am providing some information about how I estimate the manufacture date of certain drums, but I am not a strong resource for some of the other things he wants to address.

In his words, he is writing about "the history of drum making, how drums were constructed, and the most popular wood types that were used and why their sound is preferred amongst drummers" and how the vintage drum makers "made their drums, how we can tell how old they are, the drummers that played them, how the popular sizes changed throughout the years."

If you can assist this student, please let me know and I will connect you to him.

Thanks. Rick

I think I could lend some assistance. This topic is something of personal interest, especially drums made in the 20th century.

How can we get a copy of this research paper when it's done? It will be a good source for future reference. Also it would be a good discussion platform for this site.

Any of of Ludwig, Slingerland, Leedy, Gretsch history books would be a good start too.

Please put him in contact with me, I think I can be a lot of help with this as I am working on a research project myself and the information I have on drum builders so far is going back to the early 1700's

Thanks for the quick responses. I will urge him to join the forum and start some private discussions with some of you. There is also a lot of good information to be gained through searching of old threads. That is where I have learned quite a bit.

Thanks to Matt (CT Pro Percussion) for spending some time on the phone with the music student. I knew I was not a good resource for what he wanted and had faith that some one on the forum would be able and willing to help.
