Mounting toms (Rogers, etc.)

Loading...

Hey,

when you have a nice player kit with tom mounting systems that are shot, what do you guys use?

My babys are my 9/72 Rogers Black Strata V, and I play it 4 piece using a Gretsch RIMS style mount clamped to a boom cymbal stand with a crash on top OR a snare stand for mounting toms.

I don't like mounting the tom to a stand so much, or at least with a cymbal attached....tom stand??

Looking for ideas.

Thanks!

A snare stand will always work. If you're worried about the stand choking the sound of the tom Gauger offers a support that fixes that.

The original swivo set up worked quite well, arguably the best tom mounting system in its day. You could replace whatever parts are missing/broken (most likely the cast collet noses have cracked) and use it again.

I agree with K.O. about the swivo system. It was a conversion that was widely used and acceptable in the sixties and early seventies by Gretsch and Luddy players alike. Also, I'm not a fan of toms on cymbal stands or snare stands.

I put my tom on a snare stand and loosen the basket so it's kinda just floating on it, the drum doesn't choke at all. I like the swivomatic arm, but I find set up is easier on the stand.

This is why I love the factory 4 piece layout on a Rogers Swivomatic set.

What do you mean? Because there's less stuff that can go wrong?

I got a very, very, good deal on my 9/72s and they're probably a strong 7/10, save for the tom mounts. A bit later on I got n even better deal on a '60s Blue Onyx Top Hat minus the floor tom (so its a 20/12/12) and I've swapped the machined collet noses onto the 9/72s and it solved most of the sliding problems on the tom arms, but I don't trust the wing nut clamp part connected to the bass drum enough to gig with (anymore...)

Is there something that can be repurposed to act as a collar clamp to prevent it from sliding back into the bass drum??
