More "slingy" Questions Last viewed: 9 hours ago

I've got a 12" Slingerland rack tom with a serial number of 187XXX and the Slingy black & silver badge. I believe this drum to be from the 1970-1972 time-frame. Would I be correct?

The drum's got a diamond mount on it and it certainly appears to be factory-installed. I was under the impression that by this time the company was using the Set-O-Matic mounts on its toms. Am I mistaken?

I've attached a few pics of the interior shell of the drum.

If it has the diamond plate (and a badge), it would be late 60s. It's a POs, I'll trade you for a vintage Timex....flowers2

I defer to Kev...he is the SlingKing...and he says it looks like 70s to him. I am only kidding on the POS...I really am. This is a nice drum, is it the one that came with the Apollo kit?

Hi, Kevin,

If it is, in fact, a 70s drum, would it still have a diamond mount in lieu of a Set-O-Matic mount installed on the shell?

Thanks!

If it has the diamond plate (and a badge), it would be late 60s.

If it was a late '60s drum, the interior would be finished with a "chocolate milk" colored stain.

The 1971 catalog seems to indicate a pretty complete transition to Set-O-Matic hardware. Only one kit (the Windsor) is pictured with a rail, but the accompanying text clearly states a Set-O-Matic tom holder.

The Set-O-Matic mount is a diamond shape, much like the old consolette mount plates. Anyone know if the screw holes line up? Maybe someone swapped it?

...and Slingerland being Slingerland, with a well-known reputation for exceptions to the "rules", I don't think it's impossible that an early '70s drum might've shipped with a rail.

SkyDog75:

Thanks for your input! As you can see by the pics that I posted there's no "chocolate milk" colored stain on the shell. It's all natural. As a matter of fact, when I popped the head on it I couldn't believe the smell of that wood! It seemed like the head had never been off.

As far as the holes lining up (Set-O-Matic v.s.consolette mount plates), they do. However, nothing was "swapped" on this one, since there's no hole in the shell in the middle of the plate, which would have been required if the original mount was a Set-O-Matic.

Well actually there are some short tom arm set-o-matics that will work without a hole in the tom.

Well, here's what I do know:

The drum's got:

1. Black & Silver Slingerland Badge with SN 187993;

2. Diamond Mount Plate;

3. Clear Interior Shell with wooden reinforcement rings;

4. Stick-Saver Hoops;

5. Original muffler, although missing the knob and rod; and

6. No extra holes or modifications to the shell.

I come up with 1970-1972 time-frame. Unfortunately, it still doesn't explain the diamond mount. I guess it's a mystery that will simply go unsolved (lol)!
