Monroe stamp ?

Loading...

Hey guys I got a smoking deal on a 6.5 x 14 Supra today (75 bucks on CL)and was trying to figure out what year it was produced. I know most don't consider the Monroe stuff to be vintage but I still think figuring out the date of the drum is part of the fun.

Anyway as usual there are some weird inconsistencies that don't make sense.

First there is a Black Labeled P-85 strainer which I thought they stopped making in 84 and switched to all chrome.

Second there is a stamp of 189 on the inside.

Now I have seen some posts that would suggest this to be January of 1989..

but in Rob Cooks Ludwig Book he uses a stamp of 104 on a Monroe drum and says that indicates a drum produced in April (04) of 91. Obviously this doesn't translate at all to my 189 stamp. Unless there is an 89th month I don't know about.

As always any help is appreciated.

Thanks !

$75 was well worth it no matter the badge.Makes ya feel good when U can luck out like that, huh! For $65 I just picked up a 1965 Supraphonic Keystone badge snare that looks like it just came from the factory (no pitting). This is the same year I was born and how it can survive that long without pitting is beyond me. It looks so good I thought it was a brass shell but its not.

Amen Redneckdrum. Might even get it for less cuz the nice lady threw in an almost new set of SoundOff Drum Silencers for free that I don't need. As stoked as I was about it I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little depressed when I got there and the badge wasn't Blue and Olive/Old School Keystone. The ad just showed it from the throw off side and I could tell it was 6.5 so I dialed her up. Beautiful drum though....looks barely used.

It's the newer Monroe Badge in the Keystone shape. #3197656. I read the serials on these don't really help with dating but I was hoping the 189 stamp on the inside would. ..and that the label on the strainer was black with a white ludwig logo and not all chrome. I know it's not a fine vintage or anything but I just like knowing the years.

Dating Monroe's is a real problem I have an 88 Colosseum s/n 3171680, it has 688 stamped on the shell I know it is an 1988 because I have had it since it was bought, it has a black and silver badged P85 stainer on it, as does my Monroe badged black beauty which is s/n 3209989 so they were still using those P85's post 1984 but I have no idea when it was made, the only clear thing is the large Keystones like Monroes with Chicago on them were made in 1985 and were transitional I have a duo modular from that period, if any one can get to the bottom of Monroe s/ns let me know.

generally what i look for (when i don't have it in front of me) is if it has a muffler its from the 80's or early to mid 90's. that might of had the black face throw off or someone else would of put it on around that time.

sometime around the 90's they stopped using mufflers. probibly around 97 when they went to the thin 8 ply shell. if yours has the modern diecast butt, then you know its a somewhat recent snare.

killer deal and i'm jealous!
