Mixing Vintage Ludwig Drums - Blue/Olive and WFL

Loading...

Dear all - i need some help here please - I recently scored a 71 Ludwig SBP 22" kick drum and 16" floor tom but no high tom. These drums are what appears to be maple / poplar / maple shells - unpainted. The stamp inside the floor tom is 71 but no date stamp in the kick. The badges are blue/olive badges dating them to 1971. I can now possibly score a 13" WLF WMP tom and was wondering whether that tom, which i believe is a mahogany / poplar / mahogany shell will work with the the other 2 drums, sound wise? Or would it not blend and/or be sacrilege to use the WMP WLP tom with the SBP Ludwig drums? I'm new to the Ludwig vintage drum thing so any input would be appreciated.

Regards

Drums: Ludwig / Star / Tama / Yamaha
Snares: Arai /Mapex / Ludwig / Slingerland / Star / Tama

There are members here with mix and match drums. Sound wise, can't tell you for sure, look wise, not bad as they are kind of similar in the pearl pattern and blue and white go together. Different badges might look out of place but I'm ocd with that sort of thing.

Sbp will be faded more, the sound will tune close with right skins, it will be a great set they will be a bit warmer but it's only 1 tom good luck let us see it.... merry Christmas

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I would bet the WFLs mix better with Ludwigs than my vintage Gretsch mix with a New Classic FT. But I gotta say, the new and old Gretschs are almost a perfect match tone wise tuned up like Max Roach or Elvin Jones or Art Blakey!

If your 71 drums are wrapped they are most likely mahogany/poplar/maple... but could be maple/poplar/maple...or maybe even one of each. Ludwig layups were not set in stone (well the poplar center was) and factory sets might be a mix of different shell types (particularly in the 60's Beatle boom era). Therefore I wouldn't worry too much about it you find a nice matching drum from an earlier or later part of the 3 ply era. They tend to work fine together.

Dear all - my apologies for the late reply - I was away on leave. I appreciate your valuable input - I ended up finding a 1970 WMP blue/olive badge tom on eBay which I purchased and look forward to receiving it. As soon as I do will definitely post some pics and hopefully some sound samples!
