Hey all,
I've got a 1965 Rogers Holiday 5 piece that's always puzzled me. It's a silver sparkle kit; and the inside of the shells is exposed wood. That is, there's none of that grey "speckled" paint.
Is that unusual? That the interior isn't painted, I mean? It's definitely not a refinish - the insides still have the labels, and you can tell it's the kit's original condition. A drum collecting friend of mine wonders if it was a custom order.

A 65 Rogers would not have speckled paint. It would have flat gray paint. Bobby Chiason has confirmed the existence of a few custom ordered kits with odd interiors.

I had an 18-12-14 Cleveland kit with the interiors lacquered like the inside of a Dynasonic. It could be done by special order.
Thanks everyone. So a custom order then? It's not painted inside - grey, speckled or otherwise (just beautiful wood) so I guess that's what it must be!
Any idea how rare a kit like this is? I'm never selling it, just wondering about this kit's lineage.
I love this kit. Wish I knew who played it before me, and what it's whole history is. I picked it up sometime in the mid-late nineties at a Guitar Center in suburban Detroit - think I paid $400 for it. It had some sort of homemade heavy metal band logo on the front kick head.
And it was "overpriced" back then! This was just before the vintage drum boom really hit (along with the Internet). I remember the drum sales guys snickering as I left. Silver sparkle kits were NOT cool (again) yet. But I had to have it... and I suspected I'd get the last laugh :).

P.S. It has a little vintage metal logo on the floor tom that says "Victor Music, Toledo Ohio". I suspect that's where the kit was originally purchased from.

1967? I don't believe anyone at Rogers would have rushed an order during that time period. The pride was thick in Covington. It was most likely pulled off the shelf and paired up at the time of the order. There was a storage area in Dayton (outside of Covington) where the drums were collected prior to filling orders. It would be understandable that an occasional blip would happen to an order.
That must be an amazing kit. Does it have much fade? I've loved the Wildwoods I've seen. What a neat concept.

Yes, they have quite a bit of fade, and no matching snare. The unpainted 12" tom has the least amount of fade. I think they were mostly played as a 20-12-16 setup without the extra 12.
