Me and Gretsch kit Circa 1983 or '84

Loading...

An old friend and bandmate from high school just sent me this pic. This is the same model and color as the Harvey Mason advert in MD that ran for a few years. You can't see the 10" tom, but the lugs are splayed (like old Sonor's) because of it's depth. I got it when I was 14 and it was my first high-end kit, after 6 years on my sparkle blue Stewarts. I think the salesman was happy to finally sell this kit so that he could make some floor space for some Tama kit with power toms.

They were 20" 10,12 & 14". I can't remember depths but the 10" tom couldn't have been deeper than 7" as the lugs were set apart to accommodate.

Unfortunately I sold it around 1998. I was 29 at the time and was going into an important studio session and really wanted a set of DWs. That gig didn't end up bring in a lot of live work afterwards and every time I played a bossa\cocktail gig with the DW 22 x 20" kick I wanted to hang myself.

Funny - when I was about the same age I held the left stick butt-end out just like you're doing in the photo. I held it that way so that I could really nail the back beats. Must have been the 'cool thing' to do at the time! You go through 'phases' as you grow and I had my share. Great shot, brought back memories... thanks for sharing the photo.

Too many great drums to list here!

Yeah that bass drum wasn't the instrument you needed for that job, the gretsch kit would have been perfect, Hey we all have those what the Heck was I thinking moments.
