Marching snare/floor tom conversion

Hey all..Was just wondering about something that i've seen a lot of, but haven't heard much about..

Anyone ever convert or use a converted marching snare drum and use it as a floor tom ? Was just curious as to the sound and overall tonality when tuned with the rest of the kit ,?

Reason being is that i may have my eye on one.. As usual, any and all thoughts are appreciated.. ;)

I have Ludwig Club date kit with a floor tom made from a 12x15 marching tenor drum. Sounds fine and matches the kit well. I also have a Ludwig Classic kit I put together using a 10x14 WFL marching snare. I left the holes for the strainer and butt so I can still use it as a snare drum if I want. For the legs I use Gibraltar rim mounts. It looks neat and I think it sounds awesome. Jerry

If you're concerned about the snare beds negatively affecting the sound, don't lose any time doing that. You will never notice anything that diminishes the quality of sound of the drum.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Not quite a floortom, but a deep rack-tom that could have been a floor tom. I recut the bottom edge, because with a snare bed it had to be tuned too high to get the wrinkles out. Sounds very nice.

It's the rack-tom in this kit:

Like bartw, I use a big ol' 15 inch marcher as a third rack tom. It's very deep and adds a lot of variety.

I use a 16" x 12" 1930's Ludwig with a suspension basket (cradle) I bought from Precision drum co. it is one of my best sounding floor toms.

I use a 10X14 converted snare as a nice step between my 12X8 rack toms and my 16X16 floor tom. I put it on a cut down snare stand so the level is an easy transition from the rack toms, slightly higher than the floor tom. I filled the throw-off and butt plate holes but didn't do anything about the snare beds...sounds good.

Thanks to all for the helpful responses.. The gentlemen selling it still hasn't replied to my email, so maybe it's already been sold.. I won't know for sure until he gets back to me..To all who were curious about my concern about the sound, you were correct..My concern was regarding the snare beds, but now i can put those concerns to rest ;)

I may be ahead of myself, but if any of what i'm planning to do comes through the way i want it to, i just may have something special, and for a good deal.. If it does, you will be definitely seeing it up here.. Thanks to everyone !

cheers,

Rob
