Man, do I miss 24" kick drums

Loading...

I just mounted trap legs onto a '90s Premier Marching bass drum. This is a nice, vintage depth kick, being 14" deep and 24" diameter.

As it has been noted in another thread I have authored, I love shallow kicks. They speak clearly. They are loud, but not all that boomy.

I forgot what I was missing with a large, but shallow kick. I had a 24x16" mid '80s Yamaha Birch Stage kick. While this had a killer sound, I now don't miss it any longer...

For some reason, this 24x14" kick speaks, is lively and responsive. I did use a Kickport on the reso head. I can do a single-footed double kick pattern almost as good as I could do with a 20" kick!!!! At some points, it is almost too quick and lively!!!! Is it the fact that it was a marching drum? I certainly tuned it like a trap bass drum!!!!

And the sound? Low, powerful, mellow, and FAT with just enough resonance to make it move the EARTH!!!!

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

There are theories that the math of the dimensions make the 24x14 the best sounding bass drum. I don't know if its true, but what I do know is that it is the best bass drum sound ever!(at least to me)!!!

I am in the market for a blue sparkle Ludwig 14x24.

I used to have a Slingerland kit mid 70's that had the phattest 24" kick I ever played. The cool thing is it sounded that way when I bought it. The guy I bought it from had taped a bag of cotton balls to the inside of the batter head and the reso head just had a felt strip. It sounded bonzoesque. It was magical.

This marching kick had that circular foam on both heads, and they were Pinstripes!!!! Obviously, I use an Ambassador now on the reso side being in a trap kit. Usually, I am not a big fan of Pinstripes on kick drums, but I am today!!!!

Sorry for posting again but my old Gretsch bass drum is a 22" and it used to have pinstripes and it sounded great. It looks weird but it sounded like mini-Bonzo.

Maybe I need to change my mind on Pinstripes, then...

I like them on this Premier. Never tried them on a Gretsch...
