I just mounted trap legs onto a '90s Premier Marching bass drum. This is a nice, vintage depth kick, being 14" deep and 24" diameter.
As it has been noted in another thread I have authored, I love shallow kicks. They speak clearly. They are loud, but not all that boomy.
I forgot what I was missing with a large, but shallow kick. I had a 24x16" mid '80s Yamaha Birch Stage kick. While this had a killer sound, I now don't miss it any longer...
For some reason, this 24x14" kick speaks, is lively and responsive. I did use a Kickport on the reso head. I can do a single-footed double kick pattern almost as good as I could do with a 20" kick!!!! At some points, it is almost too quick and lively!!!! Is it the fact that it was a marching drum? I certainly tuned it like a trap bass drum!!!!
And the sound? Low, powerful, mellow, and FAT with just enough resonance to make it move the EARTH!!!!
