Lyon & Healy restore help needed Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I have had this old painted blue bass drum around for a while and just got to

finding out what is is.

I have id'd it as a Lyon & Healy 12" X 30".

here's the surprise. After careful inspection I am convinced that

it has the wood inlay as shown in the accompanying picture.

Question: How can I get the blue paint off without raising the inlay.

the shell is thin so the inlay is thinner and that means I can't sand it. I am afraid of using stripper. What to do???

Also the tension rod heads are huge. May have to try a socket wrench.

This could be a beautiful drum and I also have the 15" NOB snare and stand that came with it. quite a project for not expensive drums but they could be beautiful.

Bill - you might want to go with a citrus based stripper as opposed to a solvent based one. Citistrip should be safe for the wood and the inlays. Don't be afraid to lightly surface sand the inlays. Most of them are a 1/16th or 3/32nds, so they have a 'little' depth to them. Just don't grind through them and you'll be alright. Nice project!

Hey thanks John. And I just happen to have some of that around.

There is a small hole knocked into the shell that I will have to patch so that will be a good place to experiment. I will try to get the paint off and then decide how to finish. Shellac? Polyurethane? Tung Oil?

Bill, I use Tung oil with sanding in-between coats with 00-00 steel wool. After two or three coats, the finish looks deep and very glossy. The tung oil feeds the wood and then the resin hardens, strengthening the wood. Other products good too, I just prefer the Tung oil.

Best of luck with the project. Really cool old drum. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Good call Purdie. The citrstrip is working just fine.

Couple more coats to go but all the inlay is intact

and is pretty as hell. I have all the hardware soaking in Dawn.

The hoops have a chrome or nickle rim over wood.

Anyone have any idea where I could get those 2 big badges

and a key to fit the large rod heads? Tympani key maybe?

If you can get a measurement of the square head of the rod, I will see if I have a key that would fit...If possible, try to use a caliper to get an accurate measurement...I do have a Ludwig tympani key as well that might work...

Cheers

Bill,

I took a set of calipers to the keys I have here...The keys that fit standard size rods are just a "hair" under 1/4" or about 5.5 mm...The Ludwig tympani key that I have is a "hair" above 1/4" or about 6.5 mm...Maybe the tympani key will work for you? If you want to proceed, shoot me a pm and we will go from there...Shipping will be from Canada...

Cheers

If the key have doesn't work for him let me know, I know several L & H collectors that I will be seeing over the summer and can check around for you as well as seeing if anyone has the wood plugs for the vent holes. What were the badges you were looking for?
