Lug holes to be drilled - what is the rule?

I'm having a 6.5x14 3ply shell being built for me. I have hardware (most of it) here at home in BC Canada. The shell is being built in Pennsylvania.

I'm using single end t-rods = 16 small tom Gretsch.

If he is going to drill the holes he wants me to send him measurements of where I want the holes - spacing and how far exactly from the bearing edges.

Will I have to send him my lugs and 8 hole Gretsch hoops for him to be able to do this OR can I send him the measurement without send the hardware?

I could drill the holes myself - I have a layout mat coming in the mail thanks to a very generous Forum member. But I thought since he is building the shell he might as well go ahead and drill for the hardware. I'm going to drill for the MicroSensitive Strainer and single point but end. Any tips there would also be appreciated. I've never done this before....on a brand new snare shell at least. I did drill some holes for a tom a while back - first one.

But it was a shell that was in very bad shape and if I did screw it up I was not going to be worried about it. It turned out good.

Your help here would be very much appreciated,

Thanks,

I should think that a drum builder would know where to drill in relation to the bearing edge.I assume you're talking about the short vintage, single end Gretsch/Gladstone tube lug that attaches to the shell in two spots.

All he should need I would think is the hole spacing dimentions, which are available on the drum builder website, and screw size.As far as the microsensitive strainer,I think they were problematic at times,so you might want to ask around a bit about that one, before commiting to that strainer/butt option.:2Cents:

There has been much discussion about this on another forum I frequent and it can get very complicated when discussing drum building, but roughly here it is

The lug's T rod receiver is 1.25" from the edge, and the lug's mounting foot might be 1.3" to 1.5" from the edge..

So he wants the distance from the bearing edge and the distance between screw holes center to center.

He probably already knows but mention spaced for 8-hole hoops

The lugs are the small Gretsch tom lugs like one the drum at the link below.

The shell builder is very good at building shells - he does not build the complete drum - put the hardware on the drum etc. He can do that if I send him the hardware or the exact measurements of where I want the lugs. He is at a disadvantage by not having my lugs - he wants to get it right - so do I of course.

I think I got it figured out. Thanks for the 1.25" from edge to lug nut (receiver point) FatherTime.

I have the lugs' top-most edge at 1" from the bearing edge - the same on the other end - that gives the drum 5/8" space at the middle of the drum - it may look kind of like this I'm thinking:

I think I will go with 1 1/8" from bearing edges to the top of the lugs = 1.5" from bearing edges to the center of the first lug hole. This leaves 3/8" clearance from reso and batter lugs at the center of the drum and will also leave plenty of tuning room as in the hoops won't come into contact with the top of the lugs..........I hope.
