Ludwig&Ludwig 1920 Marching Snare

Loading...

Hi Fellows!

I recently bought a L&L early 20's marching snare drum.

All original parts (even calf skin heads!).

Good condition overall, just some rust on hardware, nothing really bad considering almost a century on it!!

Oval badge with L&L name and trade mark and Chicago, USA on the bottom.

It cost me at the ballpark of $140 shipped.... what do you people think about it?

I´ll like to play on it a little bit, so, of course i have to remove/replace original heads....

So question is: What kind of heads would you suggest me, in order to be respectful in some way, with the original sound of marching snare?

I thought in some Fiberskyn on top and a clear ambassador on the snare side.... (I´m a remo guy but if you know/think other brand would fit better, I´m all ears!!)

ps: could somebody tell me how to upload pics?Help2

Best regards!!

I assume cat gut snares as well...

To make the sound as accurate and true to the original as possible, I'd contact CT Pro Percussion (member here) as he is offering new calf heads. Save the originals (smart man!) and put new calf heads on to play it.

If you search, there is a tutorial on uploading pictures, but if you scroll down when you post, there is a box to click: "Manage Attachments", and that sort of walks you through it...

Looks good!

I'd definitely go with calf heads on that. Amazing the snares are in such good shape too! They usually get all mangled up...

Heraldo,

The historical military unit I march in uses four mid '30s, double tension L&L snares (16"x12"). Same shell as your drum. We use Fibreskyns on the top and clear Ambassadors on the bottom with the original gut snares. Nice deep throaty sound close to a that of a large rope-tension drum. If you won't be marching out in the elements with your drum, calfskin would be your optimum choice for a batter. Is that a 14" or 16"? Ideal tuning is fairly high tension on the reso head and looser tension on the batter, but as your drum is single tension, you'll have to find a happy medium. Nice drum. Enjoy.

Thanks both of you for the enlightening posts. Bowing

It´s a 15".

I think i´ll go for the calf skins directly.

Best regards!
