Ludwig vs. DW

Loading...

First off, this video is not meant to show anything other than how similar a vintage Ludwig and dw can sound. I was reading the other thread about Camco vs. dw and I remembered, although not Camco, I did have a video with both Ludwig and dw drums. The 13 and 22 are 3 ply Ludwigs, the 16 is a collectors dw. They all have Remo black dot heads. I used this set up at many gigs and to me, the drums sound very similar and work well together. Please listen responsibly.

I bought a DW set a while back... sold it about a month later. To me, it just didn't give me an improved sound over my early 70s Ludwig 3-ply shells!! I'd put my 3-ply shells up against a DW kit any day!

I know that the sound/beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. and I'm not discounting the high quality and sound of the D-dubs, but I like the sound of my Luddys better. I'd own another d-dub kit though..

I've never owned a full dw kit and really have no desire to get one, but the floor tom I used in this video sounded very good to me. It was a 14x16 with re-rings and like I said, it worked well with the 3ply Ludwig drums, never let me down at a gig. I prefer vintage kits mainly because of the rounded bearing edges, most of the modern kits have sharper edges and sound too bright, but with the right heads and tuning I can achieve a nice tone out of any kit. The one thing working in dw's favor is their re-sale value, they don't seem to depreciate as much as other modern kits.

I thought the kit sounded real good, if it was just a sound file I dont think anyone would have picked on the floor tom. Nice playing by the way!

Thank you!

nice playing.

From what I have heard,Collector series drums are great tha t low rumble ,as are vintage ludwigs,so it does not surprise me that they blend that well together.

I have never owned a DW,but have heard the CS drums do not do as well

At high tunings.

Thanks, I wish I had taken lessons or joined the marching band in high school, but in those days I was too busyPartyand chasing all the cute girls to take drumming seriously.DOH

Anyway, I really liked that kit, I think I paid around $200 and gave up a ride cymbal.
