Ludwig Supra Cut Badge Last viewed: 28 minutes ago

Hi Folks,

I know a lot has been written on this cut badge but I'm wondering how many would take a chance on this snare in the hopes it is a COB? I haven't seen a lot of cut badges from this era that are COA. I checked and whenever you google cut badge they all come up with the reference to COBs. Does anyone have a COA cut badge from this era? I looked at the shell and it looks like there's not a lot of pitting which is a good sign. There seems to be a lot of misinformation regarding these like standard COA shells left over from 60's. Obviously from the pic one can't see if there's a "B" or "BR" stamp and there's no indication to it's weight. I've read that they were Artist models etc but again no real definitive answer. Would it be worth the gamble for a good price?

Great forum and I always appreciate the info!!

On my cut badge COB, the centre of each lug doesn't fit flush with the bead of the shell - there's a small gap. Hard to tell if that's the case with this one, but might be worth looking at if you can't get a close photo of the muffler knob area.

If the price is right, it would be worth the gamble. Brass, or aluminum you'll be getting a nice Supra. All price dependent of course. I hope it turns out to be a COB for you.

Welcome to VDF!

Too many great drums to list here!

My gut tells me that its a ludalloy model and not the brass model. What ODG mentioned about the lugs is right on track. From what I see in the pic, the lugs seem to fit nicely on the one in question. Good luck either way.

Is there a well-guarded secret here? I've never heard this story...

From teverson-sr

Is there a well-guarded secret here? I've never heard this story...

There were some brass shelled supras made at around the time of the badge changeover (they may have been intended for endorsers). These brass shells were punched for a Keystone badge so they had to cut the new B/O badges to fit (too close to the bead). So when you see one of these cut badges it might mean there is a brass shell under the chrome...however, it is a near certainty that at the time of the badge transition there were alloy shells that had similarly been punched for a keystone so there are probably alloy shells that also have the cut badges.

So a cut badge isn't a slam dunk for COB...as neither are crimped beds, pre-serial badges, or red BB mufflers for the earlier drums. But worth further investigation...

I had a super sensitive cut badge snare in jaw dropping chrome condition.

Ludalloy.

Ask for more pics, good luck.

Well the mystery is solved!! Not a COB. Definitely a 60's shell drilled for a keystone. Slightly heavier that my 71 but not enough to be brass. Looks like the 60's Ludalloy shell were a little more robust. In the end it was worth the gamble for the price and it is a nice snare. Interestingly the 60's shell seem less prone to pitting than the 70's ones. There is a GH stamped inside of the shell just above the badge. Wondering if anyone can shed some light on that?? I've had lotsa supras but never seen that before.

Again thanks for the input-it's what makes this forum great!!

thx
