I was wondering on peoples different favors in 1960's Ludwig Drum sets sounds, I was looking at the timeline and from 1960-68 shells were made out of 3-ply Mahogany/poplar/Mahogany and from October 1968-up they were made from 3-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple. I haven't really personally found a difference but was wondering if anyone favored one over the other? & maybe and some soundclips of the differences?! Thanks I'm pretty new so be easy

In general, it seems that the mahogany shells are preferred by most vintage guys. For some, it's simply 'older is better', but lots of folks say they can hear the difference. I've heard & owned both shells, & find there's so much more difference in sound caused by heads, hoops, bearing edges, etc, that shell lay-up doesn't seem to figure in, as much. Still, the sight of a nice, clean mahogany interior can get the juices flowin'. Just my 2c....marko
