Ludwig Snare Question

Loading...

I recently picked up a Ludwig Coliseum with the intention to sell it to someone that may get more use from it than I would be able to give it.

I noticed that there is a perfectly square cut out on the angle below where the bearing edge makes contact with the head. If you flp the drum over there is one on the exact opposite side of the drum from the top and in the same spot on the angle.

At first glance I thought it may have been ply separation but the angles are too perfect, but I suspect that it may have actually been part of the shell manufacturing process. I am guessing that the cut out was part of the mold of the shell itself. The square looks like it less than 1/8" (or 2 ply's I guess), maybe 1/16".

I tried to snap some pictures, but the head reflects the flash and you can;t really see it.

Can anyone confirm or provide insight on it?

The drum sounds fantastic BTW.

Thanks!

I spoke with a local vintage drum guy and he said the gap is caused by Ludwig using shorter ply's when making the drum and is not that uncommon.

Just take the drum into a well lighted area and post up some pics!

....and try to turn off the flash on your camera. Helps me sometimes.

I pulled my Coliseum out and looked at the bottom/reso side and I don't have any cut-outs as described.

The last picture provided isn't in focus, you were closer than the minimum focal distance, so I'm still not seeing exactly what you are. You may try moving the camera away slightly to get it in focus and then crop the image in a photo editing software to highlight the trouble spots.
