Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl Score!

Loading...

Hi y'all

I feel drawn to this place, almost like a magnet to....Excited

Needed to start a new post and I think I have a good reason to turn a few heads.

I found this 1976 dated (badges in the 950k's) full Ludwig kit in gorgeous Sky Blue Pearl. Bought it from a drummer who just acquired a new DW kit for his gigs. Said he wanted to "modernise" so get this out of the house. He was the original owner! $800. Yep, $800. Included 12,13,16,22 and really nice Supersensitive snare with almost zero pitting. Hollywood kit. Right?

All drums had very recently replaced Emperor and Diplomat heads. Wrap is in excellent shape with no lifting of the seams and only minor, unnoticeable scuffing. Came with dual tom arm and floor tom legs (not pictured). All shells 3-ply with re-rings and have clear maple interior and mufflers. It just needs the gunk cleaned off hoops and lugs that naturally build up over time.

What do you think? Score!!Jump For Joy

well its not a holly wood per say as the new cat would call it a rocker for the new gen of drummers the term holly wood became out of date because of the new era of rock and roll but still the same configuration sweet on the snare thats worth pretty much 1/2 the kit good score

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

Thanks jaghog.

Just had a look at the 1976 catalog and it appears to be the "Big Beat" just before the rocker kit?

Bass has the curved dissappearing spurs.

I was wondering about the Supersensitive strainer system. I took it apart today to make sure it was clean and re-lubed. Its my first Supersentive so, learning about this drum.

The strainer seems to be a bit "over-engineered". I got it all back together and played the drum. Sounds fantastic as a Supra should. I'm wondering how to best adjust the snares though using the rather complex set of screws on the armatures? What about the plastic tie rods? Do they ever break? Looks like they have to bear a lot of pressure...

These ones are fine but can't help being concerned over highly mobile plastic parts on a snare...Violin

Cheers!

Hey! Nice score!

I've got a Super Sensitive, and you're right. It is over engineered for a rock snare.

I think I've used mine twice, maybe three times. While it sounds great (it should, it's a Supra on steroids) I rarely drag it out. I much prefer my Black Beauty, Supraphonic or Acrolite if I'm looking for the Ludwig metal sound.

Definitely, score! Beautiful set of drums. I recently acquired an SBP kit too. The thing about SBP is; as it ages, it can go two ways on you, it can take on a greenish cast, or it can go a really rich grey/charcoal color as the blue fades.

My blue pearl has aged to that great grey pearl look. I see yours went that way too. I have to tell you, I much prefer the grey tones to the original brighter blue tones. It should be a choice of finish; Grey Pearl, or something like that.

My puppies are 63's and they sound awesome. If your kit is anything like mine, they are going to be a real joy to play. Congrats on a GREAT buy!

Re: The ss... turn the drum over with the snares engaged and see if the wheels on either end are evenly tensioned. (in other words, one wheel isn't further down the screw-post than the other.)

If one wheel is tensioned further down the post, loosen both wheels until they are at the same spot on the screw-post. Then one side at a time, always keeping them at approx. the same spot on the screw, tension the wheels one half turn at a time until the snares are tensioned the way you like them. ie; loose, splashy, or tight, crisp. Next, look at the bottom of the strainer and see if the bottom edge of the strainer is parallel to the bearing edge. You'll have to remove the heads and hoops to check this. If the bottom of the strainer is askew, not perfectly parallel, loosen the two retaining screws on the strainer, give it whatever little twist it needs to be parallel to the bearing edge and then lock it down. As long as the mechanism is properly adjusted, it'll not only work well, it'll give you sounds and a sensitivity that you won't get from any other snare drum. I LOVE super-sensitives. The most amazingly articulate drums made. From buzz rolls to all out, the quality of the sound just oozes from this drum. If you need any help adjusting the drum, I'll walk you through it. PM me. I also have a boatload of replacement parts, plastic sliders, arms, connectors etc. Be happy to send you the odd part should you need it... I'll give you the 'cousins discount' - free part! lol Just let me know if you need anything for the drum. I even have a set of ss wires collecting dust...

Enjoy your new kit,

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Amazing score, Kellyj. I think you did very well at that price. Those are great drums in a really classic color (one of my all-time faves) and a Super Sensitive to boot. I have a Super Sensitive and while it takes more finesse to get it right, I think it's an unreal snare. Purdie Shuffles' tips on adjustments is right on the money. Over the years, I've drifted around to other snares in the quiver but constantly come back to this one. It's my go-to and I have a feeling it will become yours too.

Congratulations on a killer kit.

Thanks for the kind comments and advice...Can't wait to get these all cleaned up. I will post more pics as that happens.

John, I may take you up on those SS wires... PM with your price on those.

It seems many of us here "shoot and score" from time to time and its really great to see pictures and hear the great back stories of the finds.

I'm wondering if we could have a bit of fun with a special thread called

"Find of the Month" based on condition, rarity and price with the trusty mods as judges and post the best find in the gallery?

Huh. I'd trade in my DW's (if I had any) for those, in a minute. I'm guessin' he's "modernizing" his stereo, too. Did you score that old receiver?.....marko
