Ludwig Rocker/ SL kit Last viewed: 52 minutes ago

I am close to pulling the trigger on a five piece Ludwig Rocker/SL kit. I had a couple of questions though. The wood grain seems to be vertical and the badge has no serial number. I want to make sure that it is an earlier Rocker/SL kit and not one made overseas. Can anyone clarify?

Could be an S/L,I have one same color,as far as I can tell the rocker kits are pretty close as far as construction details from year to year, the S/L kits have many anomalies, esp on the bd spurs, mine came with heavy duty curved spurs,I have seen straight 60's style disappearing spurs and the thinner curved spurs also,an S/L kit should have 6 ply bass,4 ply tom shells, and the badges do not have serial #'s as far as I can tell, most S/L including mine have beige/yellowish/Tan paint on the inside of the shells,so I don't know if the grain is horizontal or vertical but I have seen a few with clear/wood int,as I remember those had a vertical grain int,but with the S/L and Ludwig in general you never know. The shells are supposed to be Maple and select hardwood, which could be poplar, but I have some very dark brown int plies on mine alternating with lighter colored wood.Your int ply appears to be very dark in color, and the grain and color does not look like maple of poplar to me.If your BD is six plies and significantly thicker than the Toms I would say you have an S/L kit. Mine has been my beater kit for 25 years and is holding up fine, good tough American kit and a great value for the money IMO.

Classic lugs on Rockers from that era indicate most definitely made in the USA..I have a set of Rockers with classic lugs, a two piece set of orphans that i rescued and restored, and later added a final generation keystone Chicago era 6 ply floor tom which weighs as much as my kick !.. Mine are the earlier, Granitone interior versions with no serial numbers on the badge. Great sounding drums.

Those shells are just ones that had imperfections on them that were "patched up" instead of throwing them out.. Ludwig just named that series Rockers. Talk about an early version of recycling ! Lol.. They sound great.. 4 ply maple with 6 ply on the kick i believe..If they're a good price, i'd snag them up..
