Ludwig muffler mishap? Last viewed: 23 hours ago

Loading...

Hello VDF,

I'm renovating my '76 Bonham 3 ply Luddy kit that was missing the mufflers or for some the tone control. I bought the P40662 thinking it would fit but the mounting screw is now on the top instead of on the bottom as in the earlier edition meaning 70's and before. Any easier way around this without paying thru the nose on ebay? When did this design change happen? Part of this kit is a 75 6 1/2 supra and I would have to drill out the bottom mounting hole to make this work which can't happen......any suggestions? I bought 5 of em to replace the missing ones. The cheapest on ebay is $65.00 plus shipping!

Many thx

i bought a muffler off of ebay last week for my newly acquired b/o badge 6.5 supra. the knob is up top on this muffler and it hits the hoop. i guess i need one with the knob on the bottom. i didnt bother to verify before i ordered it..so, i feel ya. mine was in the 20 buck range though.

theres a transition change, my freind was getting ready to buy some for his 69 /70 kit and he was going to buy the ones on top, so he pointed it out to me i was in shock ,the ones on bottom are rarer and harder to find and that what he needed a sharp eye caught that almost blunder

Hi Mike,

You must of got a new one then. I checked one of my other kits and the flat head mounting screw is on the bottom. What is the cut off year for mufflers with the mounting screw on the bottom? I have quite a few kits and just assumed they were made the same so I ordered new ones from the drum shop(who said they were the same) lo and behold somehow they are reversed now albeit they look identical except for this detail. Just wonder if anyone has modified one to fit a vintage snare/tom?

Thx

Hi Mike,

Those are definitely the right ones. I installed the new ones but the tension knob sits at a distinct reverse angle to the batter head. I can see why they changed it though as installing the screw on the bottom is a tricky process for those with less than nimble fingers. Just a thought does Ludwig make more than one replacement muffler? I.E. oldschool with the mounting screw on the bottom? I mean there arenmillions of these out there and what eranof drums are the P40662's for? Is this an oversight?

P.s.

Thx for the link....I never win on ebay!

I needed three mufflers in my '70s Vistalites that were missing them. I wasn't concerned about keeping them all original, so I bought these PEARL #734 mufflers from Guitar Center.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Pearl-Internal-Muffler--734-104916101-i1136067.gc

They are the right size and hole placement, and I only needed to enlarge one hole on one drum.

They look nice and work well. At $4.99 each, they are a steal!

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

I've got a 1969/70 kit and the knob mufflers have the screw on the bottom (I just went and looked). My snare is 1963 and has a baseball bat muffler, which also has the screw on the bottom. Then I checked my 1959 snare and it has the larger knob muffler and the screw on the bottom.

So I was wondering if they started with knob mufflers with the screw on the bottom because it had been on the bottom for many years before? Old design habits? Then I wondered if the hole pattern for the baseball bat mufflers is the same as the knob mufflers. Just idle curiosity since I don't intend to take my drums apart to measure accurately. :D

its pretty much the same up till the keystone b/o transition maybe for reinforcement is why they did it it looks like it will hold better with bolt on top maybe some drummers pushed hard on them.

"your pushsing to hard on me ey wahhhh"

hmmm have to try that oldie but goodie now that its in my head

"i don't care what they say to me gonna live my life the way i wanna be

your pushing too hard" .....

Well I checked the new parts catalogue and sure enough the drawing of the muffler has the screw on the bottom with the same model number with a slight variation P4066-2 as opposed to mine P40662(screw on top). (http://www.ludwig-drums.com/pdf/av1453.pdf) These were what I ordered after looking in the music store catalogue. Nowhere is the muffler with the screw on top displayed in the parts catalogue. I've looked all over and can't find a Ludwig drum either vintage or modern that has the mounting screw on top! maybe someone can point me one out but it would seem that the mounting screw on the bottom is way more prevalent. I just wonder why they make these if they don't fit any of their drums...mmmmm
