Ludwig modular mount questions

I'm thinking of getting a tom for a kit I'm piecing together that has a modular mount. The plan is to re-wrap it and mount it on a snare stand. 2 questions:

1. Does the fairly large hole drilled into the shell for the modular mount have drawbacks to the sound? If so, what?

2. If I go for it, should I fill the hole with a dowel, or just wrap over it?

I don't think you'd be able to hear a difference in your drum and a drum without a large mount hole, and no one listening will, either. I think the virgin drum thing is all overblown, and that's coming from a guy with a virgin kick and snare.

I recently asked the same question regarding filling the hole. I got a pretty even mix of answers. Some people have never had problems with the wrap sinking in, and others have had it happen multiple times. If you have the know-how or can find someone who does, it probably wouldn't hurt to fill it. Better safe than sorry. Plus, it'll look better whenever you have the heads off.

If it were me I would fill the hole, you chance the wrap possibly warping into that hole over time, plus it just looks better, more professional. If the mounting hole is wrapped over there is no difference in sound.

plug hole before wrapping, if something were to bump the shell with no protection, the wrap would likely end up with a hole in it.

I filled one with fiberglass. Worked well and affer sanding and rewrapping you can hardly tell.
