You couldn't get Mod Orange in the Standard line...nor could you get that particular wrap to recover a Standard shell. But if you did replace all the hardware on a Standard shell you'd have the equivalent of a Classic anyhow since they used the same shells.
Kevin, I have a pic somewhere of a standard set that is mod orange. It was an oddball for sure but it's real! Certainly is'nt anything normal but I am willing to bet that this bass drum in question was wraped using a standard shell.
Prosix, it's quite faded and I would offer 200 bucks. I have a 1969 8x12 that would match perfectly with that drum! If you decide to pass or may even be interested in my 8x12 to start a set, let me know!
First, the serial # and date stamp look legit, but I didn't think that Mod Orange came out until the 70's? Since the interior is not original, it could be possible (somewhat unlikely) that this was re-wrapped, but that's hard to tell without a seriously close inspection. Idk, maybe it was a shell that was leftover from the previous era.
Second, negotiating is a pain, but whoever states a price first loses.
The guy most likely already knows what he's willing to let it go for, so if you come in above what he wants... you get had. If you come in too low, he might get offended or will have a harder time coming down and realize that someone else might be willing to give him what he wants, especially if he's already been sitting on it for a while. Something as unique as that finish, and the right buyer (for him) will eventually materialize.
Have him give you a starting point to work with so you can both meet in the middle respectively. If he says $350 is the lowest he can go, and you're in the $150-$200 range, then you can decide how willing you are to meet halfway. Make sure to point out that the interior finish is not original and you are concerned as to why, not to mention the cost of replacing the consolette should be factored into the price.
How bad do you want it?
Mod Orange was first offered in 1967.
Is this Drum still available by any chance?
Could be wrong. I think they sold on ebay right after the post was started.
