Ludwig marching drum Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Just got this drum the other day. The badge reads "Ludwig Drum Co./Chicago" and has no serial number. The interior is painted white, but no date stamp visible. There is a handwritten letter "P" just above the vent hole inside. It appeared to have the original Ludwig heads & snare wires, and did not appear to ever have been removed. The hoops were out-of-round, especially the snare side, but the shell is reasonably round. The bearing edges were in pretty good shape, too. When i replaced the heads, i was able to get the hoops to stay more or less centered, and tensioned evenly. It was a little tricky, since it's a "single tension" drum, which means that you cant do one head at a time, they have to be lined up/tensioned together.

If anyone can give me an idea as to the manufacture date, I'd appreciate it. Possibly early-mid 60's?

Thanks,

Ken

No serial on the Keystone badge would be from approx. late 1960 to mid-late 1963. Prior to that the Ludwig badges were the silver/blue and from the latter point serial numbers were added. The white interiors started around 1962ish (I think). In any event it appears to be a early 60's drum.

Beautiful drum. Interesting with the "P" inside. I always read that it meant Pearl which designated that the drum was destined to be wrapped.

Hmmm...interesting...according to catalogs from that era, it's a Stadium model, since it has 8 tension rods instead of six. That model was available in pearl wraps, painted, or the mahogany finish. It doesn't look like it's been tampered with, and there are a few dings here and there, so i'm inclined to believe the finish is original.

It sounds great, by the way, good tone, and has a nice "bouncy" feel on the head.

True Mike but that was Slingerland, and done with a rubber stamp. My guess is maybe an inspector whose name started with a "P" approved it. You see lots of initials scribbled inside shells, maybe the fact this one is a "p" is just a coincidence.
