Ludwig legacy classic vs vintage ludwigs for jazz? Last viewed: 58 minutes ago

Loading...

Hi!

It´s my first post here. I´m looking towards a new kit and plays mostly jazz but also some blues and big band.

Searching for a kit that can work both in high and medium tunings.

Read some on ludwig legacy classic and many people seems to think it reminds alot of old Ludwigs 3ply.

What do you think of LC, does it work good for jazz, does it have more projection than vintage ones?

Why I´m little afraid buying a vintage kit if the shells not round or bearing edges not in good condition, and I have not the skills or equipment to do it myself.

Go on get a vintage kit. You'll love it. Don't worry too much about condition to start with just get those old shells. Then if you change your mind stick em back on feebay and move on. I swear though you'll love a set of old keystone luddies.

Welcome! All of us here will probably recommend vintage, but there's good reason:

- Great bang for your buck

- No manufacturing waiting time

- Different tone than even vintage-inspired modern drums (often better in many opinions)

- Holds value better

- That undefinable "mojo" factor

I use vintage Luddies for all my jazz shows, and you'll often find Brian Blade on vintage Luddy tubs, too. In fact, there are quite a few jazzers that use old Luddies, especially Club Dates. They project enough for any acoustic application, and mic up great also.

Like geckobeats said, even if you do come across a dud, it's easy enough to recoup and move on. Finding your one-of-kind vintage keystone kit is a real thrill!

In fact, forum member kellyj is selling a beautiful set of Club Dates in the For Sale section for an outstanding price in my opinion. They'd be amazing for the applications you're describing! And you can be assured of quality condition based on the kit's history.

Thanks for your reply. Okay I'm convinced! :) brian uses vintage Ludwigs, i didn't know, love brians playing!

Those drums kellyj is selling seems like nice drums altough i would like a different wrap as pearl or oyster.

One more thing, i live in Sweden so it will hard to just put it on ebay again if it's a crappy one, to expensive shipping and fees. By the way what is the most economic way to ship overseas from US to europe?

USPS is almost always the cheapest option for shipping outside of the U.S. You may want to check out HideHitters in Amsterdam, the intra-European shipping may be cheaper. Also note that trumvertstan.se may be a good source for local re-wrapping services if you find a good option that doesn't quite meet your color desires.

Thanks poppies!

Have you any clue how much it would cost to ship a 20/12/14?

Of course I will look if I find something in europe area, but seems prices are better in US.

What should I look for when buying vintage luddies? Condition, models, year etc?

I lokked at hidehitters and emailed them just now.. Do you have any other vintage drumstores in europe?

Plektrum in Denmark has amazing vintage items. So does Nick Hopkin in the UK.

Shipping varies considerably based on weight, number of boxes, etc. Definitely at least several hundred in USD.

Regarding what to look for: there's no better education than that found in this forum! Search for threads on Club Dates, Downbeats and Jazzettes if you're interested in smaller size vintage Ludwig 3-ply kits.
