Ludwig Kit - I.D., Date, and Advice Requested... Last viewed: 1 day ago

Okay, I'm pretty good with 60s and 70s era Ludwigs, but I'm guessing these are probably late 80s, early 90s judging from power toms, and deeper kick. No badges present. Odd, tape band bisecting each painted shell. Six ply, (?-wood) with no re-rings. Lugs appear to be large, classic, but have tab inserts rather than springs. Question: Date, model, and where it was made? Any real, (potential) collector value?

This is a nice, big sounding kit, and is generally in good shape. hate the thin tape, but pulling one off leaves texture difference on shell surface. Thinking this is probably a great candidate for refinishing/wrapping, and if I go that route, I'm wondering, (with 1 up, two down config I've shown) if perhaps either a shallower, (Ludwig) replacement rack tom, or alternately, (and this is the real question) perhaps get the existing 12" rack tom shaved down to shallower depth... I hate the thought of altering good quality drums that might have the potential to be collectible some day, but I think the shallower rack could make this into a cool, contemporary kit. The finish is not all that great, and I could re-virginize the kick, (and even the toms were I to put on some suspension mounts) Thoughts and suggestions from the forum would be greatly appreciated.

this is Monroe 90's era. No they aren't collectible. for many reason one it's already been refined, and two their 6 ply maple luddy shells in as you mentioned power tom configuration. these are awesome sounding drums and are heavy as hell to carry Ugh!! leave the modular tom mount in the bass drum this is good hardware some like it some hate it. I like it.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Thanks vintagemore2000 for your prompt response. So these are U.S. made? As far as refinements go, as far as I know, there are none - I just played around with configuration to see how it would look/feel before I did anything permanent. Still looking for opinions on 12" rack tom...

Your concerns, & plans for rewrapping, & reconfiguring are all overly complicated & expensive. Take the tape off, clean them up & live with them as they are.

I'm looking at re-sale. Have 4, 60s Ludwig kits now, as well as a Pearl BLX, (similar era to this kit). Would try for most cost effective modifications for optimum payback - I also get a kick out of it.

up untill the 2000's ( and maybe still to this day) monroe ludwigs had 8/8 lugs on the 11x12, 12x13 toms and 6/6 on the 8x12, 9x13 toms.the deeper drums always had more lugs. (the 13x14 tom had 10lugs!)

please don't drill or modify the shells, todays "not so collectable" drums are tomorrows "Vintage" drums.

and by the way they are still made in the U.S.A. even if its in North Carolina instead of Illinois.

Thanks clubdate64. Don't worry, I don't drill good quality drums, if anything, I try to properly fill any unnecessary holes with plugs cut from un-salvageable drums of same diameter. My dilemma here has been what to do with the 12" power tom. The 13" works great as a suspended floor tom, (and I would not drill for leg mounts either) - just thinking that this would be a much more contemporary, (and sale-able) kit with a shallower rack tom. If replaced, (and with your advice, I'll probably keep original in tact) will probably at least include it in the deal, to keep originals together. I appreciate all the input.
