Ludwig I.d. Help Requested

Loading...

I'm going to have the opportunity to display some of my vintage snare drums at a public venue in the near future and want to make sure that I'm providing accurate and complete descriptions of each. I've got a Ludwig COB (shell and rims) 5x14 ten-lug snare with Imperial lugs, a pre-serial Keystone badge and baseball bat style muffler (red felt pad). From what I've researched, this drum should be catalogued as a Super Ludwig snare. Is this correct? If so, could one of you experts "enlighten me" as to the difference between the Super Ludwig model and the Ludwig Supraphonic model? Is it solely the date of manufacture or are there actually some physical differences between the two models?

As usual, THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

From the catalog pages on this site...

The first time Ludwig calls the metal snare the Supraphonic is in the 1964 catalog printed in 1963. The previous two catalogs call it the Super-Ludwig.

+1 on that. The difference in the Super Ludwig 400 and the LM 400 Supra-Phonic is the the shell material.Super Ludwig is brass, and the Supra is aluminum alloy. There are Supras out there with crimped snare beds that people swear are brass but they aren't.There are Super Ludwigs out there with red BB mufflers too. These drums share a lot of features except the shell material, and thats the real difference.
