I'd never even heard of a snare bed until I started hanging out on drum forums. Bearing edges, ply layups...nobody was too aware of that stuff back in the day or really cared...drums were made of "wood" or some sort of metal (I thought Supras were made of stainless steel when I was younger) and as long as they looked nice the average buyer was happy. You might get a drum that you could never get to sound quite right but generally the blame would be placed on the owner not knowing how to tune a drum. Everything is different today with everyone clued in and concerned about every little construction detail. For the most part the manufacturers have stepped up their QC to address this new scrutiny...but 35 years ago they could ship a lot of questionable stuff out the door and usually get away with it. Not that they were trying to screw their customers but it was simply a different time and the bar for customer satisfaction not set quite as high. This applied to other drum manufacturers besides Ludwig as well. The quality of new drum construction is the best it's ever been, which is why even the low and mid range sets can be made to sound very good.
Ludwig Hammered bronze with WRONG Snarebed Last viewed: 1 hour ago
So, it's been a while, but today i got back the Hammered Bronze from the drumbuilder.
He did a really good job on the Snare, it sounds amazing.
Here's what he did:
- The Snarebeds were not alligned right in between two lugs, so he had to re-hammer them a bit.
- he drilled new holes and moved strainer and buttend
- the holes were closed with brass/bronze bolts.
- the hoops actually were damaged as well, so they were replaced.
- he said the drum was pretty much "under-dimension" (is that the right word? meaning the shell was very small for a 14" so he put thin gaskets under the lugs, to perfectly align the tuning screws.
I got back the drum all set up and put together, so I can't really take pics of the "new" snarebed.... but it now is an amazing drum!!! Cool1
What do you think?!
It looks beautiful... If it sounds as good as it looks you must be very happy.. Nice Salvage of a sloppy production..
Cheers
