I was wondering if some of you Ludwig experts out there could help me a little learn about Ludwig snare drums. Since I'll by at the drum show this year a little education would be helpful if I decide to pick any up. Here are some of the models I've seen around, if anyone can post a quick description on what year, size, is most sought after, and idealy what type of music they are best suited for. and price range. I appreciate it.

That's a tall order my friend, but a good one! I'd honestly suggest this book

[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Ludwig-Book-Business-History-Softcover/dp/188840809X[/ame]

It's pretty darn good. There are some things left to be desired but if you want to know the difference between types of drums and their era's and who played them, it's what you need. As for what types of music they are all good for? If your looking for a nice pop/crack then I'd stay smaller (ie 4/5/5.5 x 14) and if your looking for a little extra power go steel or brass. If your looking for a little more butter with your sound, it head towards the 6/6.5/8 x 14 variety. I have several snares and they are all their own monster. To be honest get a good pair of 5A's (or whatever you play) sit down, tune it up and just play it for a bit. Be soft, go crazy and groove it a bit. I have always know when I played on that was meant for MY sound. That's what it's really about, you and your sound.

Hope that helps!

Yes. My favorite Ludwig wood snare is an "Auditorium" model I have. People talk about how great the Jazz Festival, Barrett Deems, and Super Classic models are. I dunno. None of them *do it* for me. The Auditorium, with its extra depth, has more of the amazing woody sound that all of these other shallower drums contain within their ply structure but just aren't able to fully express...

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

The only one I can think of that you did not mention is an 8x14 coliseum.
