Ludwig GHOST - $65 OBO Last viewed: 34 minutes ago

It seems the Ghost is one of those love/hate things. Guys who love them could never play anything else, then there are those who would plop it in the trash compacter.

I like them -- but I do have just a few too many pedal hanging around. So here's the story.

A while back on ebay I saw a "box of parts for Slingerland hi hat." Well, there may have been a few Slingerland parts, but it was chock full o' Ghost parts, including rubber pads, hoop clamps, connecting 'straps,' new bushings, fasteners, washers... etc.

So I scouted around and found a reasonable restoration candidate, then learned there is zilch you can do with these. So I did what I could, which was bead blast the footboard and put on some clear polyurethane shot some silicone lubricant into the spring housings...a couple of times (p.s. Do NOT use WD 40 for this kind of stuff. Yes, it penetrates, then turns to goo. A clock repair shop friend told me that he can always tell when a guy has been in there to fix it himself, because there's goo all over the gears. But I digress.)

New pads, new clamp, new bushings and connecting straps - the red you see in the pics is the grease I used when this was re-assembled.

I did not paint the housing...I wanted to leave the letter decals on there- I think they're cool.

So... $65 OBO, 7$ to ship. I'm really trying to avoid ebay these days... corporate behemoths scare me a little... thus the OBO tag. REASONABLE, please...

Pics will take you to the album...

Thanks, Mike -- honestly, there was nuch I did with this crazy thing... re-did the footboard, added the new parts, and tried to clean it as well as I could.

It IS pretty nice though...if I say so myself... and the engineering still fascinates me...

What year did Ludwig make these? And how do they compare to the Speed Kings? I have seen these every so often and wondered how they are. Is there just 2 coiled springs (looks like) that give you the action and is the tension adjustable? Cool pedal.

Oh BTW what size beater do they use? Std Ludwigs or is it special for this pedal? Thanks.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Good questions. I think the Ghost pedal has its own history by the time Ludwig put their name on it. But I think there was really no change.

It is nothing like the Speed King, or any other pedal. It does use coiled springs, like you'd find in a clock.

One side provides resistance on the way down, the other gives lift on the way back up. That's what the letters are for on the side "dials," the spring casings. They are rotated in opposite directions.

It's an amazing design.

I think the online authority is at http://www.billyrhythm.com/drums/ghost/

He provides history and instructions.

Yes, it uses a regular beater. I do have a wing nut for the beater...forgot to put it in when I took the photos...
