Ludwig Downbeat Dilemma Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So for a few years now I have been hunting down a Champagne Sparkle Snare to complete my 1964 kit. When they have come up in the past they have been either too expensive or I was just was too cash poor to buy. Well I finally got one at what I thought was a descent price ($400.00....I know still pretty spendy)

And when I got it from the seller (ebay) it had this small crack on the inner shell. In the pictures during the sale it looked more like the typical scratches you see on interior Ludwig Paint. Everything else looks great on the drum but I am thinking about returning the drum.

I want to know what you guys think of this particular damage. It is a little over 1 ply deep. Affect the sound? How much it hurts collectability.

Thanks

Not a big deal here. Seems minor, unless it's buzzing when you play the drum.

Not sure about how much the crack affects the collectability. But if everything else about the drum meets your needs, then I would see how much it would cost to get it repaired. I am sure someone on the VDF would be able to help out or provide knowledge on the correct procedure.

I personally look for these types of fix-ups. Put a little work into it and make it yours. If the repair is done properly, it should last forever. Once the heads are on and your banging away, know one will ever notice it.

If the seller didn't disclose the crack, tell them you would like to return it or maybe they would refund part of price, if you keep it.

Just some thoughts. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Thanks,

Tim

One of the problems is that I cannot play it because I do not have the lug inserts yet. It's slightly (Very slightly) raised on the other side of the shell opposite the crack. How do you even get a crack like this on the interior? It's like someone slipped with a chisel and nicked it or something.

Thanks Tim! I am actually that guy looking for drums that need a little work also. I think my problem is that when I usually find those drums I am not paying $400.00 bucks for it!

Is this the Downbeat that sold on June 21 for about $396? Also listed as a 4x13? If so, I noticed another Downbeat, Champagne Sparkle, and totally complete, that sold for $529. What's it going to cost you to obtain the proper lug inserts and period correct tension rods and wires? If you're not worried about these parts being Ludwig, you can probably repair the small inner damage for not too much.

Again, if this is the drum you purchased, I also noted that the seller said very little about it, with no mention at all about this damage. Remember, always ask plenty of questions when the seller is not up front! Maybe you can negotiate some money back?

Let us know what happens!

Thanks! I had an opportunity to buy that other drum and should have gone for it. I think it was actually forum member Altlanta Drum Guys and was a 64' that was perfect match versus the 65'. Part of the reason I went for this is that I had the correct snares and tension rods.(and lower price) Just needed the inserts. But you are absolutlely right that I should have asked about that rip in the paint because i did give it a double take. ....but wrote it off as a scratch in the paint.

I think you made the right choice and it's nice of the seller to take it back. Stay on the lookout for a Downbeat more to your liking. They're out there!
