Ludwig Combo Ebay Score Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Ok, I know I'm supposed to be the Ludwig go-to guy here for the most part......however, I need some info on my latest ebay score. I have seen this drum in the catalogs only, never seen one in person. Its a Ludwig Combo snare drum that dates to 1979. It has a textured molded shell, composite fiberglass I think, and plastic (?) lugs. They were marketed as a student line snare, but this one matches the pattern of Black Panther so close I just had to have it for my Hollywood kit.

Does anybody know a lot about these? How durable are they? Do the lugs hold up under normal use or are they like Rogers drawn brass Bread & Butter lugs? Any experience as to the sound quality to them?

Finally, what's it worth? Bidding closed at $150, and I think it may be a good buy. BTW, it comes with the UFO case and stand as well. Even if its more of a collector/conversation piece, I'd be happy with it, but playing it out once in a while sure would be cool too!

I should have some pics of the actual drum posted once it arrives.

I'd say worth no more than $200-$250. I'm happy you got a black panther snare for all the BP drums you have!

I think my brother had one of those going into 9th grade. I almost without a doubt kinda remember something through the fog about they ordered this really neat drum he saw in the new school catalog. If I remember, he got the drum at the end of the school year when I graduated and he pitched a fit because he traded his Acrolite for it. I know for a fact he took it back and they tried to make him keep it.

Since mom was working for a lawyer that tactic lasted for about 9.34 minutes, and when mom decided it would be easier to file a suit and complaint against them, they magically produced his Acro, although it was ostensibly "sold"....His was a 76 (Acro), his first drum. I remember the incident, however I am uncertain it was because of the sound, or because of the lugs. He was a heavy hitter and I am thinking he was more concerned he would break the lugs.

Anyway, I recall it was quite a cool looking thing. And my money says you have a eunuch. That is the only time I have ever seen one. It could be the one we sent back....

Hey L-D,,Your Ludwig snare came out with this Plastic lugs drum back in 1980..When ludwig change shells to 4 ply maple with-out rings they had to do something with all of the old 3 ply shells{classic shells} with rings{ones with the paint inside} These set's were only sold in 1980 and only came in two sets 22,13,16 or 22,12,13,16 the snare that came with the sets were the arco's..The first Comco made sets used plastic lugs, also these drums were single headed drums even the bass drum..Your snare was also offered as a student snare by itself in the 1980 catalog..The story goes that these lugs were so bad that ludwig change them to the big classic lugs with in 6 mos to used the shells up..ludwig also at the same time used up the vistelites shells in these set's but used the big classic lugs on these till 1981..When try sold them out..Mikey

Actually Mikey its a plastic shell too (possibly fiberglass) not wood. So you're saying the stock lugs are fragile to say the least?

Ludwig-dude,yes the plastic lugs are very fragile, thats why Ludwig stop useing them..Too many problems--do you recall the Sonor Swinger line of drums they also used plastic lugs with no springs to hold the inserts in --the insert was just a nut..i think your snare is pretty rare with the shell being made of plastic or fiberglass--The only Combo snare i have seen was made of a 3 ply classic shell, had the plastic lugs that looked like the classic line of lugs with 3 lines. But it had a p-85 strainer on it.I pass on the snare i should i give the guy the 75.00 he was asking...Mikey
