Ludwig Coliseum has made me change my grip

Loading...

So I got my mid-80s COW Coliseum by Fedex yesterday and took it to rehearsal last night. This thing is amazing, but with the die-cast rim the rim shots are so loud it literally made me change my grip in half the songs from matched to traditional.

On the plus side, it's nice to see the guitar players make those faces. For now I'm ahead in our internal arms/volume race. Victory!

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

Nice man, I play a Coliseum too, though mine does not have the die cast hoops. Be careful with yr wrists on that thing!

I have a Coliseum too, maple with the triple-flange hoops, and it's my favorite (even more than the brass and bronze snares that I have)! I always wanted to put die-cast hoops on it but never got around to it as it sounded so good stock.

This one came with the cast top rim already on, but I got the original flanged as well. Which strainer do y'all have? This one has the P87, and it's the first time I've ever used one. Seems to work real well for this drum.

Mine came with the P-87. I really like the aesthetics of the throw-off but didn't really care for the individual snare strand tensioning of the P-34 butt, so I changed that to a P-32 butt and a wider snare.

I recently put mine back on the stand and really, really liked it. Mine is from the early 90's with the blue marbleized finish. I did put aluminum die cast hoops on it. Mostly because they were the only die casts available as mine is a 12 lugger. Mine has the p-85 strainer, which I have never had a problem with and actually like.... I keep saying someday I'll take pics of my stuff, someday just seems so far away..
