Ludwig Classic Snare I Won On eBay Last viewed: 14 minutes ago

Almost a year ago, I took a gamble and ended up being the lucky recipient of this Ludwig Classic snare in WMP. The eBay posting was generic with only a few pictures but I was interested in it mainly as a matching snare for my WMP Superclassic set that I already had, plus it had 8 lugs. I was surprised upon its arrival to find that it appeared to have original batter and snare heads and snare wires on it to boot, not to mention a fair amount of dirt. The make-shift muffler seemed to have been part of a old school towel or sweatshirt.

So I started dismantling the drum and much to my surprise there was a fair amount of gunk hidden under where the hoops, head and shell all meet up. Almost looked like it had been sitting out in a barn for X number of years untouched collecting all sorts of funk. However, the wrap was in near mint condition with no noticeable flaws; just dirty.

The inside of the shell (first picture) was crisp white and very clean which told me that the heads had not been removed all that often or for very long; probably only to install the make-shift muffler. Anyways, the remaining pictures are of what the snare looks like today after I cleaned and polished and put new heads and snare wires on it. I put new hoops on it as well because I didn’t have the patience to polish the rust off of the originals, I still have them though and I also have the original snare wires as there was nothing wrong with them. The off-center badge adds character. I think the lugs are COB as they are somewhat dull looking compared to the hoops. Any ideas what it’s worth cleaned-up with original parts? (not that I’m looking to sell). Just thought I would share…

I think those lugs are nickel plated hence the difference.

Great looking snare I'm sure someone will come in with more qualified eyes to weigh in on it

Clean the hoops........they will make the drum sound better if NOB

I cleaned a pair of NOB Slinger 14" hoops the other day outside, and put some CD in the boombox, and went to town...

Looks much better now!

Nice snare. Mine is a 1967 COS. If you are willing, I would like to buy your Ludwig wires. PM me if interested.

SuperClassic...SUPER SNARE! Good job! I certainly would never sell it.

Regarding the lugs, I don't know that Ludwig ever made the bow-tie lugs in brass. Always pot metal I believe, (one of the Gurus here may set me straight).

I'm not sure by what you mean as a make shift muffler. That drum appears to have tne correct "baseball bat" muffler.

tamadrm, the make-shift muffler I was referring is actually shown in my first post, the third picture. It's a piece a towel or sweatshirt that had a school name/logo on it. But you are correct that it has the proper BB muffler on it as well. Sorry for the confusion.
