PF/BGT!...

Actually, Buddy didn't play a 26" while with Ludwig. It was a 24", although the depth did change later to a 16X24, and this was at the tail end of the endorsement period with Ludwig. Also, after 1980 and up until till 1982, Buddy was still playing Ludwig, but with NO endorsement deal. The shine was way off the apple between Buddy and Ludwig by then! During this period there was no Ludwig logo on the front bass drum head, but the BR crest was of course still there. I have some pics from this period WITH a Ludwig logo too... but it was eventually removed.

A lot of this has to do with "angle"... as that can make it appear that the bass drum is a 26". I'll attach a couple pics: One is of my 1965 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's with a 14X24.. but note that the bass drum "looks" larger than a 24" due to the angle of the shot. Next is a pic of Buddy's restored Slingerland's WITH a 26" bass drum. See how much TALLER it is compared to a 24"? The bass drum in the pic from Disneyland is a 24".

Mike's set is pretty special in that it HAS a 26" bass drum!, not to mention a GREAT price! But again, Buddy didn't really play a 26" with any regularity until the restored Slingerland set from 1983 up until his passing in April of 1987.

As always right on the mark Tommy.

I wasn't aware however of the fact that Buddy had been using a 16x24 in that shall we say "dark" period of the last part of him playing the Ludwigs.......interesting.

Like you, I was following him all over New England and beyond and never noticed that change in the bass size.

To your point about the angle, here's a picture taken in.....I'm guessing 80'-81' in Framingham MA and his mounted tom looks bigger than a 9x13 from that angle. I don't think that it is, but it appears larger to my eyes in this photo.

The other question I have thinking about it is.....Buddy's "L" arm for his splash was a Rogers arm wasn't it?

Did that follow him through all of the changes in endorsments and set evolutions from say the Rogers period of the early to mid 60's through the Radio Kings at the end in 87'?

Ah Yes Sir, the good old days!

Thanks again Tommy.

BGT!

Allow me to clarify a bit... the Buddy Rich Model set was cataloged with a 16X18 bass drum, although I doubt that Buddy actually had one as Ludwig was all done supplying him with drums by 1980! Interesting too, and agreed completely, is your comment that we were all interested in Buddy's performances/drums back in the day, but not so close as to notice subtle changes in his drums/set-up. Today of course, he couldn't get away with a head change without someone making note of it! LOL!!

Your picture from Framingham is an excellent example showing the "illusion" of size based on angle! What a great shot! That rack tom does indeed look positively HUGE, but it is in fact a 9X13.

Ah... the Rogers "L" arm! Buddy continued to use the Rogers "L" arms right on through his Slingerland endorsement. When he went back with Ludwig in 1977.. ( and for the third and final time! ) .. Ludwig "L" arms were used, and those stayed in place right up to the end of his career with the restored Slingerland's. The Rogers Swivo-Matic bass drum pedal was in place throughout though. As a matter of fact, the Trixon hardware was so lousy that Buddy used ALL his Rogers hardware while endorsing Trixon/Vox., with the exception of the tom mount and floor tom legs. While with Fibes he used his Rogers hi-hat, snare stand, and both "L" arms, but the cymbal stands were an unknown brand... and they were flimsy!

Awesome stuff guys this History Lesson is great.. :) and it all add's to the mystic behind this kit since Buddy was gone by 1988 the year of manufacture of this kit I have often wondered who special ordered this kit and with the 14x26 it is a mystery for sure ludwig did not even offer a BR kit in 1988 so what do you think would have to be a special order right?

Mike T!...

First... my apologies on the slight "hijack" of your FOR SALE post/thread, but I guess on a positive note it does keep your drums upfront.. and .. it was all connected to the whole BR basis of your set, which leads nicely here:

There is no doubt in my mind that whomever owned those drums before you did indeed special order them. It IS a Buddy Rich model through and through and only made all the MORE special in that it features a 14X26 bass drum. Incredible... and EXTREMELY desirable! I suspect that they were probably ordered by a BR freak that wanted to pay tribute to Buddy while enjoying a more "modern build" on the drums if you will. The added fact that they are WMP just about totally seals the deal on a Buddy connection. The 14x26 is something though... jeeze. As to WHY you still have these BEAUTIFUL drums in your possession:

It isn't your price, that's for sure! You are offering these at an incredible value, especially with the way the set is configured. I honestly think it's just the current state of affairs given where most folks are with regard to jobs/cash. 5 years ago these would have been gone in the first week.. today .. well, what's that old maxim: "Patience is a virtue". Indeed. I have seen so many drums NOT SELL that would have been gone instantly years prior. Just the way it is currently, with hopefully a turn-around of sorts on the horizen. SIGH. That all said...

If I weren't already flush with Buddy drums/sets, I'd grab these Mike. I constsantly get comments/compliments on my '65 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's at EVERY venue I play, especially with the 14X24 bass drum. I would LOVE to show up with a 14x26!! I'll also say that Buddy would have loved those too.. ( downplaying it the whole way of course! LOL! ) .. especially with the 14x26!
