Ludwig B/O badge w/o serial number Last viewed: 54 minutes ago

Hello All,

I recently acquired a 22" Ludwig SS bass drum in very good condition. I cannot post pics right now, but there is no serial number on the pointy B/O badge.

What does this mean, if anything? I've heard that endorser drums were number-less, but I'm wondering if there is any other significance other than someone forgot to punch in a number?

My understanding is that they are indicative of drums made in 1970.

There are a couple of ideas when this might have worked.

One - during the transitional period (late 60's to very very early 70's) some kits were sent out prior to serial numbers being issued.

Two - some vista kits had some of these put on.

...were there other times??? I don't recall.

The way I understood it was that "prototype" or "pre-production" B/O badge drums didn't get serial numbers as the pile of badges they had in the "product development" department were issued without serial numbers. Badges for regular production drums were pre-stamped by the badge manufacturer and sent to the assmebly department that way.

Anyone else?

This is what I've heard also.

Ya got me! I really had never heard that. It makes sense. I think, by law, they were required to put some kind of serial number on any products that were sold.

I have an acrolite that has a B/O badge with no serial number. Actually the badge has a four digit number that looks like it was poorly carved in. I always figured the drum could be a late 1969 drum. Of course there is no date stamp anywhere!DOH

Could be a replacement badge...I thought stainless steel drums came with the rounded badge?? Unless SS means silver sparkle, in that case it's probable from 1970. What does the interior look like? Clear maple interior with reinforcement rings?

yeah, I think those SS badges were black and white pointy style parallelograms.

But, as far as the B/O badges without numbers being product development things...I'm not sure, because the drums I own that have those badges are just common sized blue sparkle 3-ply clear maple interior shells -nothing out of the ordinary, as far as product development, that I can see.
